You can make a convincing hackathon demo with fictional records built around the screens and flows you need—without copying customer, coworker, event-participant, or social-profile identities. For a short demo, hand-authored fixtures or a generator such as Faker are usually a better starting point than statistical synthesis from real records. Keep those demo fixtures distinct from synthetic datasets intended to preserve population patterns: they serve different purposes and need different checks.
Start with what the prototype needs to show
Write down the journey you will demonstrate, then list only the fields each screen and interaction requires. A signup page may need a name, email-like value, and status; a dashboard may need linked accounts, dates, amounts, and a range of states. Do not add personal details merely to make a record look more lifelike. The UK Government’s Data and AI Ethics Framework recommends limiting data to its purpose and considering synthetic or anonymised data for testing.
This is data minimisation in practice: the fixture should reflect the application’s schema and demo journey, not imitate a complete person. Make values plausible in context, but fictional. Names, contact-like values, dates, amounts, and statuses should support the interface without implying that a real person is behind a record.
Choose a data-making method that fits the demo
| Method | Best suited to | Trade-off or limit |
|---|---|---|
| Hand-authored JSON or CSV fixtures | A short demo with a few known screens or UI states | Gives direct control, but you must maintain relationships and edge cases yourself. |
| Faker for Python | Generating varied fields, localized values, and repeatable test records | Convenient fake-value generators do not establish statistical fidelity or privacy. |
| Statistical synthesis from real data | Work that needs selected population relationships or group structure | Requires more effort and governance, including checks of utility and disclosure risk. |
| Microsoft Synthetic Data Showcase | Exploring privacy-oriented synthesis and aggregate views | Its approaches have use-case-specific limits; evaluate them against your risk model and data needs. |
The Office for National Statistics (ONS) notes that simple synthetic data matching a source’s row count, columns, or file size can help estimate code or process behavior and support development while access to real data is arranged. More complex techniques may preserve selected statistical properties, but “Synthetic data will not preserve all features of the real data they represent.” For a typical hackathon demo, begin with hand-authored fixtures or Faker unless the prototype genuinely depends on population-level relationships. That is a practical fit-to-purpose choice, not a benchmark showing those methods are superior.

- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
For details on the Microsoft project’s differential-privacy and k-anonymity approaches, see its Synthetic Data Showcase documentation. Its documentation discusses utility risks and attribute-inference scenarios; no technique is automatically suitable for every release.
Build a fixture around the journey and its edge cases
- Map the screens and interactions. Identify the fields and relationships needed for each step, including what appears after a successful action, a failed action, or an empty result.
- Create the smallest useful record set. Hand-author JSON or CSV when you need a few controlled examples, or use a generator for varied values. Faker’s documentation covers common generators, locales, and custom workflows.
- Add deliberate states. Include ordinary success, an empty state, long text, boundary values, invalid input, missing optional fields, and linked records. Make these cases explicit rather than relying on randomness to produce a demo-worthy screen.
- Use fictional contact details carefully. Prefer clearly reserved or fictional values where possible. A generated name or email-like value is not a guarantee that its combination cannot point to someone real.
- Run the actual demo paths. Check that the interface renders values plausibly, constraints hold, relationships resolve, and the states you plan to show are visible.
ONS distinguishes synthetic data from sampled real records: randomly selected rows from a real dataset still represent real people. Changing a few fields on copied profiles does not make the remaining identity and attribute combinations safe by definition. ONS says synthetic data should be unlikely to accurately reproduce real data.

Make generated records repeatable
Random variation is useful during development, but a live demo should not depend on chance. Faker provides seeding so the same methods and same Faker version can reproduce the same output. Its documentation warns that results may change between patch versions, so pin the exact version when the generated output itself is relied on. Keep the generation script, schema, dependency version, and fixture version with the project. See Faker’s documentation on seeding and reproducibility and the UK Government Digital Service guidance on synthetic data.
A seed does not replace intentional test cases: preserve explicit records for states that matter, such as an invalid form or a missing optional field. Use generated variation for breadth, and fixed examples for reliable demonstration.

Keep demo fixtures separate from statistically useful synthetic data
A visually convincing demo fixture answers questions such as “Does this screen render?” or “Can this flow handle a missing field?” It does not show that the prototype performs well on a real population. If you need to evaluate group patterns, model behavior, or statistical relationships, that is a different task: define which properties must be preserved, assess utility and disclosure risk, and document what the resulting data does and does not support.
The UK Government Digital Service warns that “Synthetic data is just as vulnerable to weakness, bias, omission and so on, as real-world data.” Synthetic data can include unrealistic dependencies, skew, omissions, or errors. Validate it for the intended scenario; do not treat successful demo testing as evidence of production performance or generalizability.

Review privacy before using or sharing data derived from real records
Fictional records written from scratch avoid using personal source records, but replacing names in real data is not the same thing. Rare combinations of dates, locations, roles, or events can leave identifying clues. The UK Government Digital Service notes that supposedly anonymised material may be reconstructable in some circumstances. Assess combinations and sharing context rather than treating name removal as proof of anonymity.
If a project uses real people’s records to generate data, keep that work in an approved environment, document why each field is needed, assess disclosure risk before release, and have the responsible information asset owner or data controller approve distribution. ONS calls for detailed disclosure-risk assessment before public sharing of synthetic data and assigns sharing decisions to those responsible roles. These are UK institutional guidance points, not a substitute for requirements that may apply in another jurisdiction.

Microsoft’s project documentation describes differential privacy as useful when cumulative privacy loss across repeated releases needs quantification. It describes its k-anonymity synthesizers for one-off releases that need precise combination counts at a chosen privacy resolution, while cautioning that homogeneity can make k-anonymity approaches unsuitable where attribute inference matters. Those are recommendations for that project’s approaches, not universal guarantees or a replacement for risk review.
