hzfind is an open-source command-line and terminal-interface tool for shortlisting and comparing machines in Hetzner’s Server Auction. It fetches auction listings, matches CPU models to a bundled PassMark database, and calculates CPU, RAM, and storage value per euro. Those scores can help narrow the field, but they do not show whether a server fits your workload or guarantee that a listing will still be available when you order.
What hzfind does
According to the project’s README, hzfind retrieves Hetzner auction data and presents listings with filters and calculated value metrics. The documented metrics are CPU benchmark score per euro, RAM gigabytes per euro, and storage gigabytes per euro. The README also describes an optional comparison against a CCX33 cloud baseline; verify the project’s current documentation and Hetzner’s current cloud pricing before relying on that comparison.
The default terminal interface and hzfind explore are documented as equivalent ways to browse. Other documented capabilities include JSON output, sorting by CPU, RAM, or storage value, limiting results to a top-N list, and list-stats for aggregate statistics about current auction data. Interactive filters include maximum monthly price, minimum CPU score, and minimum core count.
The README says prices are VAT-inclusive by default, with options to change VAT display and configure the rate. Check that setting against your own VAT situation when comparing the displayed monthly amounts.

Install and start comparing
The project README documents installation through Cargo from the Git repository and lists Rust 2024 edition (Rust 1.85 or newer) as a requirement. These are documented project requirements and may change; check the README for the current installation instructions before installing.
- Install a compatible Rust toolchain if you do not already have one.
- Follow the current Cargo installation command in the hzfind README.
- Launch the default interactive interface, or run
hzfind exploreto enter the documented browsing interface. - Set filters that reflect your actual limits, such as a maximum monthly price, minimum CPU score, or minimum core count. Use sorting and top-N output to reduce the candidate list; use JSON output or
list-statsif those formats suit your workflow.

How to judge a shortlist
Start with the workload rather than the highest score. A machine that looks inexpensive per benchmark point can still be a poor fit if its CPU generation, memory capacity, storage type, location, or monthly cost does not suit what you plan to run.
- CPU: Check model, generation, core count, and whether the benchmark-based score is relevant to your workload. PassMark matching is a comparison aid, not a workload-specific performance test.
- Memory: Compare available RAM with your application’s needs, including headroom for the operating system and services.
- Storage: Confirm drive type and capacity. A high storage-per-euro figure does not tell you about redundancy, failure recovery, or workload suitability.
- Location and price: Check the specific listing and interpret its price using your VAT position. The auction inventory and prices can change.
Confirm the actual machine’s specifications in its current listing and in Hetzner Robot. Hetzner’s documentation says the Robot Hardware tab shows basic specifications for Server Auction servers. For planned upgrades, check compatibility for the particular machine before buying or scheduling additional hardware.

Understand the auction before waiting or ordering
Hetzner describes the Server Auction as a Dutch-style auction: a server’s listed price starts high and drops over time. You can order once the price is acceptable, but another customer may order the machine first. Hetzner sets starting prices by server model, and supply depends on previous customers cancelling servers, so a particular model’s availability can vary. Because hzfind’s data and the live order page can diverge as listings change, recheck the machine and price on Hetzner’s order page before acting. A saved shortlist is a comparison record, not a reservation.

What buying an auction server entails
Hetzner says auction servers are previously used machines made available as newer generations are introduced. It says each machine receives a full hardware test before listing, while also warning that hardware can still fail. The auction landing page notes that the selection includes reused hardware and some customized systems. Auction machines are delivered in the Rescue System, and some standard software-installation features are unavailable for customized systems.
These are dedicated root servers for people comfortable administering a server. Hetzner does not include software support; customers are responsible for configuring, securing, and monitoring the machine, as well as backing up its data. The FAQ also states a dedicated 1 Gbit/s uplink and unlimited traffic for auction servers; treat those as Hetzner’s stated service terms and confirm them on its current official page before ordering. Accordingly, weigh the price and hzfind scores against hardware age, workload requirements, backup and recovery plans, redundancy needs, and your capacity to operate a dedicated machine. The tool does not remove those responsibilities.
