Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →For an Obsidian developer vault, start with Dataview Query Language (DQL) for project indexes, task lists, review queues, and other readable dashboards. A DQL query needs an output type such as TABLE, LIST, or TASK; then use commands such as FROM, WHERE, SORT, and LIMIT to refine it. Inline DQL is for one value, not a collection of notes. The examples below are templates: adjust their folders, tags, and field names to match your vault.
How Dataview queries fit together
Dataview reads metadata in Markdown frontmatter and inline fields, then displays computed results. Its four query modes are DQL code blocks, inline DQL, DataviewJS blocks, and inline DataviewJS. For common dashboards, DQL is usually the clearest starting point.
DQL is SQL-like, but it is not SQL. Each DQL block begins with exactly one query type—such as TABLE, LIST, or TASK—and can then use data commands to choose and refine results. See the documented query structure and query examples and command reference.
Useful DQL dashboards for a developer vault
1. Build a project index
If project notes share fields such as status, language, and repo, a table makes them easy to scan:

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
```dataview
TABLE status, language, repo
FROM "Projects"
SORT status ASC, file.name ASC
```
Notes without one of those fields will have incomplete cells. Standardize metadata before treating the table as a complete inventory.
2. See open tasks across active projects
Use a consistent tag convention, and make due a date-valued field if you want due dates to sort as dates:
```dataview
TASK
FROM #projects/active
WHERE !completed
SORT due ASC
```
Dataview’s project repository demonstrates task queries and tag scoping; the query documentation describes filtering and sorting.

Please note that this hub is compatible with MacBook (macOS 12 and newer), Windows 10 and 11, ChromeOS, and laptops equipped with DP Alt Mode and Power Delivery. Note: This device is not compatible with Linux.
- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (5-in-1, 4K HDMI), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
3. Review recently modified project notes
This query sorts project notes by modification time and displays at most 20 results:
```dataview
TABLE file.mtime AS "Modified", status
FROM "Projects"
SORT file.mtime DESC
LIMIT 20
```
LIMIT restricts how many results appear; it is not, by itself, a guarantee that a broad query will be inexpensive to run.
4. Find notes waiting for review
This list depends on your notes using a stable status field and the exact value review:

- Flawless 4K@60Hz Video with HDMI: Delivers exceptional clarity and smoothness with its 4K@60Hz HDMI port, making it ideal for high-definition presentations and entertainment. (Note: Only the HDMI port supports video projection; the USB-C port is for data transfer only.)
- Double Up on Efficiency: The two USB-A 3.0 ports and a USB-C port support a fast 5Gbps data rate, significantly boosting your transfer speeds and improving productivity.
- Fast and Reliable 85W Charging: Offers high-capacity, speedy charging for laptops up to 85W, so you spend less time tethered to an outlet and more time being productive.
- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (7-in-1), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
```dataview
LIST
FROM #work
WHERE status = "review"
SORT file.name ASC
```
5. Put one value in a sentence
Inline DQL can calculate a single value, such as the number of unfinished tasks in the current note:
Open tasks: `= length(filter(this.file.tasks, (t) => !t.completed))`
Inline DQL evaluates one value. It cannot gather multiple pages or use query types and data commands; move that work into a DQL code block.

Start with a query type
A DQL block cannot begin as though it were an ordinary SQL statement. Put a type such as TABLE, LIST, or TASK first, then add the source and other commands you need.

Use Dataview syntax, not copied SQL
SQL experience helps with the general idea of selecting and filtering data, but Dataview has its own query structure and syntax. Check the structure documentation and its guide to differences from SQL rather than importing SQL assumptions.
Handle field names that collide with keywords
A field named from or where can conflict with a DQL keyword. The Dataview data-array documentation describes accessing colliding fields through the row object, for example row.from or row.where.
Access fields with spaces deliberately
For a field named Field With Space In It, use bracket notation such as row["Field With Space In It"]. Dataview’s FAQ also explains its normalized lowercase, hyphenated field names. Consistent, simple names are easier to query and maintain.

Keep broad queries scoped
In a large vault, narrow the source with a folder, tag, or link where possible. Dataview’s query-structure documentation warns that some queries can take a long time or, in extreme cases, freeze Obsidian. It does not give a performance threshold or a safe page count, so there is no universal cutoff to rely on.
Put code in the correct query mode
A snippet containing dv uses the DataviewJS API; it belongs in a dataviewjs block, not a DQL block. Dataview also supports inline DataviewJS, but it is a different mode from inline DQL. The API documentation describes the JavaScript interface.
When to use DataviewJS instead
Use DataviewJS when the transformation you need is awkward or impossible to express clearly in DQL and you are comfortable reading JavaScript. For example, this uses the API to filter and sort project pages before displaying a table:
```dataviewjs
const pages = dv.pages('"Projects"')
.where(p => p.status === "active")
.sort(p => p.file.name, "asc");
dv.table(["Project", "Language"], pages.map(p => [p.file.link, p.language]));
```
Treat copied DataviewJS as executable code, not harmless query text: the documentation on DQL and JavaScript query modes warns that JavaScript queries can access the file system. Review a snippet and its source before running it.
Quick Recap
Choose the query mode that matches the result
| Need | Good starting point | Why |
|---|---|---|
| A table, list, or task view across notes | DQL code block | Readable, shareable queries cover many everyday dashboards. |
| One computed value in a sentence or heading | Inline DQL | Evaluates one value rather than returning a multi-page collection. |
| A transformation DQL cannot express clearly | DataviewJS block | JavaScript and the Dataview API support more complex views, with greater code-review responsibility. |
| Inline JavaScript capability | Inline DataviewJS | Provides access to the DataviewJS API; it is not inline DQL. |
