You can display your DEV.to follower count in a GitHub profile README by using a GitHub Actions workflow to run a script that fetches the count and updates a marked section of the README. Anna Villarreal’s example uses a scheduled daily run and also supports manual updates. Its endpoint and pagination settings should be checked against current DEV API documentation before you rely on them.
How the automatic update works
The approach pairs a Node.js script with GitHub Actions. The script reads a DEV API key from an environment variable, requests follower records in pages, totals them, and replaces the text between two markers in README.md. The workflow runs the script and commits the README only if it changed. See Anna Villarreal’s example workflow and script.
A GitHub profile README is a customizable part of your profile. GitHub’s profile documentation notes that follower and following counts are hidden when a profile is private, so check your profile visibility if showing this information is important to you.
Set up the README display

Add the markers where the count should appear, with the desired display text between them. For example:

Place the update script and workflow in that repository. The script uses the markers to identify which portion of the README it can replace; keep both markers intact.

Configure and run GitHub Actions
In the published example, the workflow is named “Update DEV.to Followers Count.” It runs daily at midnight UTC, supports a manual workflow_dispatch run, checks out the repository, sets up Node.js 22, and runs update_script.js. It grants the job contents: write so it can commit and push a changed README.

Give the workflow only the repository write permission it needs to update the README. The example uses
contents: write. Confirm your repository and Actions settings allow the workflow to make the commit. -
Run the workflow manually once, then inspect its logs and the resulting README change. Avoid printing the API key in logs. Once the run succeeds, the scheduled trigger can keep the display refreshed.

Choose a refresh schedule
The example supports both recurring and on-demand runs. A daily schedule keeps the displayed number refreshed without requiring you to trigger a workflow yourself; a manual dispatch is useful when you want to update it immediately. More frequent runs mean more workflow executions, so choose a cadence that matches how current the profile display needs to be.

The example requests /api/followers/users in pages of 1,000, adds each returned array’s length, and stops when a page contains fewer than 1,000 records. The published article is an implementation report, not current official API documentation. The available documentation here does not establish that the endpoint, authentication requirement, pagination size, or rate limits remain current. Check the current DEV API documentation for those details before deploying, and adjust the script if the documented contract differs.

The author reports that a change to the API call and removal of unused code resolved problems in her own setup. That account is useful context, not a guarantee that the same code will work unchanged in every repository or under current API behavior.
Keep the number in perspective
The original article shows 34996 as an example README count. It is a snapshot from that article, not a current count or a general statistic; the available page information gives a September 23 posting date without a year. Use the workflow’s fetched result rather than copying that sample number.
If you only want a compact display, marked text is sufficient. Other profile elements can take more space and offer more customization, but the example does not compare alternative implementations. GitHub’s guide to following people explains GitHub’s own follower behavior, which is separate from the DEV count shown in the README.
