The right choice depends on the accelerator and its thermal requirements, the server’s rack density, and whether the facility can supply the required power and airflow. Dell positions the air-cooled PowerEdge XE9780 for AI model training and inference; whether it fits a particular site still requires checking that server’s configuration and the site’s conditions.
What the PowerEdge XE9780 is designed to do
Dell describes the PowerEdge XE9780 as an air-cooled AI server for model training and inference, and lists two 6th Generation Intel Xeon Scalable processors. That positioning makes it a relevant example for organizations evaluating individual enterprise servers for AI workloads, rather than assuming every deployment needs a liquid-cooled rack-scale system.
Dell’s May 2025 announcement says air-cooled XE9780 and XE9785 systems simplify integration into existing enterprise data centers, while liquid-cooled XE9780L and XE9785L models are positioned to accelerate rack-scale deployment. These are product-positioning claims, not assurances that a given site can install a server without changes. Power availability, cooling capacity, airflow, and the selected accelerator configuration still need to be assessed.
How to choose air, hybrid, or direct liquid cooling
Dell’s guidance is to consider air cooling for moderate-TDP GPUs and lower rack densities. It describes direct liquid cooling (DLC) as best suited to high-power SXM/OAM GPUs or dense racks above 30 kW, associating DLC with thermal stability, lower fan energy, and sustained performance. Those are Dell’s recommendations and claims, not universal engineering thresholds or independent test results. Confirm that a specific server supports the selected accelerator and cooling arrangement.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Dell also groups infrastructure into three PowerCool solution bands. These are Dell categories, not universal design standards:
| Dell PowerCool category | Dell’s stated rack range | How to read it |
|---|---|---|
| Enhanced air cooling | 5–15 kW/rack | Involves containment and airflow tuning. |
| Hybrid-cooled infrastructure | 15–40 kW/rack | Dell’s middle category; the source does not specify a single configuration that defines every hybrid deployment. |
| PowerRack direct liquid cooling | 40–80+ kW/rack | Dell’s higher-density liquid-cooling category. |
These ranges overlap at 15 and 40 kW/rack, so they are best treated as broad solution bands rather than crisp handoff points. Dell’s AI server overview separately identifies DLC as a fit for dense racks above 30 kW. The appropriate design depends on the actual equipment and facility, not a single rack-power number. See Dell’s PowerEdge power and cooling overview and PowerEdge AI server guidance.

Which site and workload factors matter
Assess the full deployment rather than treating “air cooled” as a standalone performance or integration guarantee. For a planned workload, check:
- Accelerator type and thermal design power (TDP): Identify the exact GPU model and server-supported configuration. Dell’s guidance distinguishes moderate-TDP accelerators from high-power SXM/OAM GPUs.
- Workload profile: Decide whether the system will serve inference, training, or a mix. The XE9780 is positioned for both training and inference, but workload demand and sustained utilization affect the deployment requirement.
- Rack power density: Estimate the planned rack load, not just an individual server’s power draw. Compare it with facility capacity and the cooling approach under consideration.
- Facility cooling and airflow: Check inlet conditions, air delivery and return paths, containment, and whether existing cooling can support the intended rack configuration.
- Integration scope: Decide how much infrastructure change is practical and whether the deployment is a set of servers or an integrated rack-scale cluster.
Rack density alone does not determine the answer: two sites with similar rack power may differ in airflow, facility cooling, accelerator configuration, or willingness to install new infrastructure.

Why the exact server’s thermal limits matter
Thermal restrictions are configuration-specific. For example, Dell’s PowerEdge R960 service manual describes restrictions under ASHRAE A3/A4 ambient conditions, including processor TDP thresholds and unsupported components or configurations. Those limits apply to the R960, not the XE9780 or the PowerEdge family as a whole. Use the thermal restriction table and environmental requirements for the exact server and configuration being considered.
How to validate a proposed deployment
- Define the workload and accelerators. Record the training and inference requirements, GPU type, and planned server configuration. Confirm support with documentation for that exact model.
- Estimate rack demand. Calculate expected rack power density for the proposed systems, then compare it with available electrical capacity and the facility’s cooling design.
- Check environmental and airflow requirements. Consult the specific server’s installation and service documentation for inlet conditions and configuration restrictions. Review rack airflow, containment, and air delivery at the intended installation site.
- Choose a cooling approach against site conditions. Use Dell’s air, hybrid, and DLC categories as guidance, then determine whether the site can support the selected approach and any required infrastructure work.
- Decide whether the deployment needs rack-scale integration. Compare a server-level deployment with an integrated rack solution based on operational requirements and acceptable facility changes.
How to interpret Dell’s headline figures
Dell publishes several cooling and density figures, but each is tied to a particular basis. They should not be treated as guaranteed results for an XE9780 deployment:
