Ghost can display tag archives and customize their templates, but its built-in theme translation does not translate tag names, descriptions, or posts. To make tag pages multilingual, first decide whether each language will have different articles or translated versions of the same articles: Ghost recommends separate publications for different content, and a translation service for the same content in multiple languages.
How do I make Ghost tag pages multilingual?
Choose the content model before changing templates or routes. Ghost’s guide to translation and internationalization recommends one Ghost install per language when publishing different content in each language. For the same content translated into multiple languages, it recommends a service such as Weglot or Transifex.

What Ghost tag archives and templates control
Ghost automatically creates an archive for each tag. The default path is /tag/:slug/, with later archive pages at /tag/:slug/page/:num/. The tag context makes the matching tag, its associated posts, and pagination available to the theme. See Ghost’s tag context documentation.
For archive presentation, provide a tag.hbs theme template. A tag-specific template named tag-:slug.hbs can give one tag its own layout. Ghost uses a matching slug-specific template first, then tag.hbs, then index.hbs. These templates control how an archive is rendered; they do not translate its fields or the posts listed in it.

Can Ghost translate tag pages?
Not with the theme translation helper alone. Ghost’s translation guide explains that translate localizes theme text using the publication language setting, and explicitly says the helper is not intended for multilingual content sites. It is suitable for interface labels such as “Read more,” not for creating translated tag names, descriptions, or post content.
When custom routes and language tags help
Ghost routes can change taxonomy paths and define collections filtered by tags. The routing documentation includes a language-tag example for organizing content. This can help create language-oriented archive structures, but organizing posts under language tags is not the same as translating their titles, descriptions, or content; those still need to be managed in the chosen content or translation workflow.

Routes and templates are therefore useful when you need different archive paths or layouts, or want to curate which posts appear together. They are not a translation system. Before launch, check that the configured tag paths resolve correctly, do not conflict with other routes, and produce the canonical URLs you intend. Ghost notes that changing or removing taxonomy routes incorrectly can cause archives to fail.
Using a translation service with Ghost
Weglot documents a Ghost integration with either a language subdomain or browser-side translation through injected JavaScript. Its Ghost integration guide describes both approaches. Choose based on the language URL structure and translation workflow you want, then verify how the integration handles tag labels, archive descriptions, post links, SEO metadata, and indexing for your publication. Behavior can vary by configuration; the integration guide does not establish one universal outcome for all sites.

Ghost names Transifex alongside Weglot as an option for translating the same content, but its documentation cited here does not describe a specific Transifex integration for Ghost. If considering it, confirm how it will connect to your publication and manage the translated archive content before committing to that architecture.
Implementation checklist
- Choose the content model. Decide whether language editions have different articles or are translations of the same articles; this determines whether separate Ghost installs or a translation service is the closer fit.
- Set up the archive presentation. Use
tag.hbsfor a shared tag layout, ortag-:slug.hbswhen a specific tag needs a distinct layout. Render the tag information and its associated posts in the theme. - Use routes only for structure. Adjust
routes.yamlwhen you need custom taxonomy paths or language-tag collections. Validate that tag archive routes still work and that paths do not conflict. - Translate content through the content workflow. Ensure the chosen approach covers tag names, descriptions, and posts; reserve the
translatehelper for theme interface labels. - Test the published archive. Check each language’s tag URL, archive text, post list, pagination, links, canonical URL, and any translated metadata or indexing behavior relevant to the selected integration.
Headless Ghost is a separate implementation
Ghost also exposes tag data through its Content API, so a headless front end can build its own multilingual archives. That approach requires the front end to implement routing, language selection, and the association between translated tag and post data; it is separate from customizing Ghost theme templates.
