MX Linux is a Debian Stable-based desktop distribution with three official editions: Xfce, KDE Plasma, and Fluxbox. Its appeal is a relatively predictable base, familiar desktop choices, and MX-specific tools for common system and software tasks. The project calls Xfce “midweight,” but that is a positioning statement—not a published memory requirement or proof that MX is faster than another distribution.

The current release covered here is MX-25.3 “Infinity,” announced by the MX Linux project on 20 September 2026. Choose an edition by desktop preference and hardware support needs, rather than assuming one edition is best for every computer.

What is MX Linux?

MX Linux is a desktop operating system built on Debian Stable. It combines that stable base with MX tools, package-management options, and a choice of desktop environments. The project describes Xfce as “a midweight desktop environment that aims to be fast and low-resource, while still being attractive and user-friendly.” That is the project’s description, not a quantified comparison or independent benchmark. MX Linux project description

In practical terms, “midweight” signals an intended balance: a conventional, usable desktop without positioning itself as the most minimal possible Linux setup. The available evidence does not establish an official MX-25.3 minimum CPU, memory, or storage requirement, so check compatibility with your particular computer rather than relying on a generic minimum-spec figure.

Which MX Linux edition should you choose?

The project lists Xfce, KDE, and Fluxbox as its official editions. Community respins also exist, but they are distinct from those official choices. MX Linux FAQ

Edition or variant What it offers Consider it if…
Xfce The project’s midweight desktop option. An AHS variant is also listed for newer firmware and graphics drivers. Project description Download listing You want a traditional desktop and are deciding between the regular image and AHS based on your hardware.
KDE A separately curated KDE Plasma edition; the download listing describes its image as AHS-based. Download listing You prefer the KDE desktop and its interface and workflow.
Fluxbox The project identifies Fluxbox as its lightweight option. MX Linux FAQ You want a more minimal desktop style rather than the fuller Xfce or KDE experience.

There is no evidence here that one edition is universally fastest. Desktop feel, installed applications, graphics hardware, and workload all affect how a system performs.

When to consider AHS

AHS images include newer firmware and graphics drivers intended for relatively new hardware; the project gives 10th-generation Intel systems and AMD Ryzen graphics as examples. The listing specifically identifies Xfce AHS and KDE AHS variants. Newer hardware does not automatically mean you need AHS: check the notes for the exact image and hardware you plan to use. How stable is MX Linux, and is it rolling?

MX Linux is not a rolling distribution. Its base follows a Debian Stable release and receives security updates; newer packages are also available through MX and Debian backports. That means the underlying system is not continuously replaced with the newest upstream versions, though selected newer software can be available without switching the whole base. MX Linux FAQ

The project says major MX releases follow Debian Stable releases, roughly every two years, with point releases in between. That is a release-pattern description, not a guarantee of a fixed release date or support end date. MX says security updates arrive automatically and directs users to its supported-version chart and manual for the support period applicable to a particular release. Check those project resources before planning around a specific end-of-support date. MX Linux FAQ

What is new in MX-25.3?

The MX Linux project announced MX-25.3 “Infinity” on 20 September 2026. The release announcement reports Linux kernel 6.12.107 for the standard editions, Liquorix kernel 7.2.6 for Xfce-AHS, and Mesa 26.1.4 for AHS-enabled releases. These are specific to the announced release; they should not be read as permanent MX requirements or promises of a particular performance level. MX-25.3 release announcement

The download listing describes MX-25.3 Xfce and Fluxbox as closely aligned with Debian Stable. It also says those images include SysVinit and systemd choices selectable at live boot. If init-system choice matters to you, verify the notes for the precise image you download; do not assume the same options apply to every edition or later release. MX Linux download listing

How do you install software on MX Linux?

MX provides several routes rather than requiring one package manager for everything. MX Package Installer offers popular applications and packages from Debian Stable, the MX Test Repo, Debian Backports, and Flatpaks. The project FAQ also documents Synaptic; KDE uses Discover in place of Synaptic. MX Linux FAQ

The choice depends on what you want to install and how you prefer to manage it. Applications from sources outside the base repositories may bring additional dependencies or desktop-integration differences. The FAQ also addresses Flatpak, Snap, and AppImage availability; consult it for current guidance on those formats rather than assuming all three are managed identically by MX Package Installer.

How to download and install MX Linux

  1. Choose an edition. Use the official download listing to select Xfce, KDE, or Fluxbox, and check whether an AHS image better fits your graphics and firmware needs. Official MX Linux downloads
  2. Download the ISO and its verification files. The project identifies ISO files as the main installation media and lists checksum and signature files. Follow the project’s verification instructions to check the downloaded image’s integrity and authenticity. Official download listing
  3. Create bootable installation media. Write the ISO to a USB flash drive using an imaging tool you trust, then boot the computer from that drive. The project’s listing does not endorse a particular USB brand or model.
  4. Try the live environment or install. Boot the image and check that the desktop and essential hardware work as expected before proceeding with an installation. For edition-specific boot options, use the notes attached to that image.

How should you move from an older MX version?

Before changing versions, make a separate backup of your Home directory so personal files can be restored or transferred independently. MX’s FAQ describes the installer’s “Replace Existing Installation” option as experimental; do not treat it as the default safe migration path. Consult the project’s migration guidance and manual for the current procedure, and confirm that it applies to your starting and target releases. MX Linux FAQ and migration guidance

Who is MX Linux a good fit for?

  • Consider it if you want a Debian Stable-based desktop with official Xfce, KDE, and Fluxbox choices, plus MX tools and multiple documented software-management routes.
  • Consider AHS if your relatively new graphics hardware or firmware may benefit from the newer components listed for that image; check the release-specific notes first.
  • Look elsewhere or investigate carefully if you require a continuously rolling base, a confirmed minimum hardware specification, or independently benchmarked performance comparisons. The cited project material does not establish those figures or outcomes.
