Choose based on your application’s data relationships, queries, transaction and consistency needs, and operating constraints—then evaluate the specific database product. As the AWS Editorial Team puts it, “For most small and medium businesses (SMBs), the real decision is which workloads belong in a relational database, which belong in a nonrelational database, and what you standardize for new apps.”
What SQL and NoSQL mean
Relational databases organize information in tables with defined schemas and relationships, and users query them with SQL. Those relationships make joins and integrity constraints useful when records are connected and queries cross those connections.
NoSQL is an umbrella term, not one database design. It includes document, key-value, graph, and wide-column models. Each structures and retrieves data differently, so “NoSQL” alone is not specific enough to guide a design choice. AWS’s NoSQL overview describes these models and their differing workload patterns.
Start with your data and the questions the application asks
List the important records, how they relate, and the queries the application must answer. If users need flexible queries across related records, a relational design is a natural starting point. If records naturally form documents or the application has a known set of access patterns, evaluate a document or key-value model that matches those needs.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Schema flexibility does not remove the need to model data. A document store still requires decisions about record shape and retrieval; a key-value design depends on choosing useful keys and access paths. Likewise, a relational schema requires deliberate structure and managed changes. The right comparison is between concrete models and actual application requirements, not between a stereotype of SQL and a stereotype of NoSQL.
Compare the requirements that can change the decision
| Decision area | Relational SQL may fit when… | A specific NoSQL model may fit when… |
|---|---|---|
| Relationships | Records have important relationships, and joins serve real application queries. | A document, key-value, graph, or wide-column structure better matches the domain and access pattern. |
| Queries | The application needs flexible queries across related data. | Reads and writes are known well enough to design around the model’s access paths. |
| Transactions and consistency | Multi-record transactional processing and relational integrity are central requirements. | The chosen product demonstrably meets the required transaction and consistency behavior for the target workload. |
| Schema evolution | A shared, defined structure and controlled migrations are acceptable. | Records vary materially or fields change frequently, and the product’s model helps manage that variation. |
| Scale and latency | The database’s scaling options meet tested workload targets. | Partitioning or another distributed design fits measured throughput and latency needs. |
| Operations and team | The team can operate or procure the relational service effectively. | The workload benefits justify model-specific design, operational effort, and expertise. |
These are decision prompts, not performance guarantees. Relational systems can scale vertically and may support read replicas; partitionable NoSQL designs can distribute throughput across a cluster. Neither observation establishes which database will be faster, cheaper, or easier to run for your workload. Test the selected product against your own data shape and traffic. AWS’s relational and DynamoDB comparison also illustrates why product-level transaction, consistency, and modeling behavior matters.

Choose a starting point for common workloads
Orders, invoices, inventory, and account records
Start by evaluating a relational database when records are linked and transactions or integrity constraints matter. Map the actual relationships and queries first; the example workload alone does not prove that a particular database is suitable.
Variable, document-shaped application records
Evaluate a document database when records naturally form documents and the application’s access patterns align with that model. Flexibility in record shape is useful only if the team still designs, validates, and retrieves the data deliberately.

Explicit key lookups and throughput patterns
Consider a key-value or another purpose-built NoSQL service when the access pattern is clear. Check the chosen service’s limits, scaling behavior, transaction support, and consistency guarantees against the application’s requirements.
Graph relationships or wide-column workloads
Name the model and workload precisely rather than choosing “NoSQL” generically. Evaluate a graph database for graph-shaped relationships or a wide-column system for a workload that fits that structure, then verify that the product supports the queries and operations you need.

Applications with distinct workload needs
A project can use more than one database model when separate workloads justify it. For example, one part of an application may need relational transactions while another has a distinct access pattern suited to a purpose-built store. Multiple databases also bring integration, operations, and data-consistency work; add a system only when its workload-specific benefit justifies those costs. AWS discusses database selection as a series of decisions in its database service selection guide.

Once a model looks plausible, compare specific products or services. Record the required queries, transaction boundaries, consistency behavior, expected traffic, growth assumptions, scaling mechanism, management responsibilities, and team skills. Then test representative workloads and failure conditions; category-level descriptions cannot establish how a database will behave for your application.

Managed offerings can change which operational tasks the team must handle, but they do not eliminate data-model or service-selection decisions. AWS’s guide, last updated June 2, 2026, covers relational choices such as Amazon RDS and Aurora alongside purpose-built options including DynamoDB, Neptune, and DocumentDB. These are examples within AWS, not a universal ranking; confirm current capabilities and availability in official product documentation.
Google Cloud’s overview of its database options was originally published August 24, 2021, with an editor’s note that it was updated March 24, 2023. It describes Cloud SQL for managed MySQL, PostgreSQL, and SQL Server workloads and lists Firestore and Bigtable among non-relational options. Treat that overview as dated guidance and verify current details with Google Cloud’s article and current product documentation before making a product comparison.
