HTML KickStart is a free, MIT-licensed collection of HTML, CSS and jQuery files for assembling web page layouts and wireframes. It can still be useful for exploring its examples or maintaining an existing project, but GitHub has marked its repository archived and read-only since January 17, 2025. Its documented dependencies and browser claims are historical, so verify them before using it in new production work.
What is HTML KickStart?
HTML KickStart is a front-end toolkit created to help developers build page layouts and prototypes from ready-made interface elements. The project README identifies version 0.94 and describes a collection of HTML5, CSS and jQuery files, layouts and components. It is free software released under the MIT License. The project repository calls it a way to get a head start, but its claim of saving “10’s of hours” is promotional language, not a measured result.
Its examples include buttons, lists, responsive menus, tables, tooltips, tabs, icons, forms, notices and layout helpers. The intended workflow is hands-on: start with a blank page, add components and adjust the markup and styles for a prototype or layout.
Is HTML KickStart actively maintained?
No. GitHub marks the repository archived by its owner on January 17, 2025, and read-only. That status means the project is not actively maintained through its repository; it does not, by itself, prove that the files are unusable or unsafe.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
The README identifies version 0.94. The available setup example uses jQuery 1.9.1, while the elements reference lists support for legacy browsers including IE 8+. Those are historical project instructions, not assurances of compatibility with current browsers, jQuery releases or present-day security expectations. Test the toolkit and its dependencies in your intended environment before adopting it, particularly for a production site.
How to try HTML KickStart
- Download the project files from the HTML KickStart repository.
- Open
blank.htmlin a code editor and use it as the starting page. - Include jQuery and the project’s JavaScript and CSS files as described in the setup instructions. The documented example is legacy, so check the dependency versions and behavior rather than assuming they are current.
- Copy and adapt the components you need. The elements reference shows examples such as forms, tabs, tables and menus.
- Save the page and open it in a browser to inspect the result. Use the HTML5 doctype, as the project materials recommend, and check layout and interactions in the browsers relevant to your project.
Who should use it today?
HTML KickStart is most appropriate for learning from older front-end examples, experimenting with a small local wireframe, or understanding an existing site that already depends on it. It is a less straightforward choice for a new production project: the archived status means there is no active repository maintenance, and current compatibility has not been established.
