RawTherapee 5.12 added ACES-based Gamut Compression, expanded tone-mapping and local-contrast tools, and improvements for selected cameras, lenses, and RAW workflows. It was released on May 28, 2025, and is no longer the latest version: RawTherapee 5.13 followed on July 26, 2026. If you are choosing a version now, check the official downloads page and verify support with your exact camera, shooting mode, and installer.
What RawTherapee 5.12 adds for editing
The 5.12 release adds tools across color, tone, lens correction, and export preparation. The most substantial color change is Gamut Compression; the release also extends tone mapping in Selective Editing.
Gamut Compression
RawTherapee describes Gamut Compression as applying the ACES (Academy Color Encoding System) Reference Gamut Compression operator. Its purpose is to improve the appearance of highly saturated colors and bring colors within a selected gamut before other color-related tools are applied. The result depends on the image and settings; the feature does not guarantee a particular look for every photograph. See the 5.12 release notes.
Tone mapping and local contrast
- In Selective Editing’s Color appearance tool, Source Data Adjustments gained additional options for the RGB-channel Slope tone mapper and a sigmoid-based tone mapper.
- The Shadows/Highlights & Tone Equalizer tool gained the Generalized Hyperbolic Stretch (GHS) global tone mapper. It was renamed Shadows/Highlights, Equalizer & GHS.
- The Abstract Profile tool gained Contrast Enhancement, which can add local contrast and may help restore contrast lost through an abstract profile.
Other workflow changes
- Dehaze became available as an option under Raw Black Points.
- Distortion Correction gained fisheye-to-rectilinear de-fishing. It works best with an equidistant fisheye projection.
- Resize & Framing can add a decorative solid-color border before saving.
- Demosaiced floating-point DNG files are supported.
Which cameras and RAW workflows are mentioned?
The release notes give examples of camera-specific changes, not a complete compatibility list. They explicitly exclude unconfirmed support, so an unlisted camera is not necessarily unsupported—and a listed model is not a guarantee for every shooting mode or file variant.

RawTherapee 5.12 also makes all images in a Canon RAW burst-mode file accessible; earlier versions exposed only the first six. More Sony lenses are recognized, improving quick-info overlay details and enabling automatic profiled lens correction. These points are documented in the official release notes.
Why the package and RAW reader matter
RawTherapee began using LibRaw in version 5.11 and can fall back to its enhanced dcraw reader when LibRaw cannot read a file. The project says its own packages include an enhanced LibRaw; third-party packages may use another version with less camera support. It also notes that LibRaw may handle some RAW files less adequately than enhanced dcraw, and that LibRaw can be disabled in preferences. For a dependable answer about your setup, test a sample file from the camera mode you use with the exact RawTherapee package and version you plan to install.

How to choose between 5.12 and the current release
RawTherapee 5.13 was released on July 26, 2026. Its notes document further improvements to Gamut Compression and Abstract Profile. They also state that Rec2020 replaced ProPhoto as the default working profile; ProPhoto remains available. Because profile-dependent tools can behave differently when the working profile changes, an existing workflow may not look identical after switching versions. See the 5.13 release notes.
- Check camera and file support: Match the exact model, sensor mode, and RAW-file variant, not just the camera name.
- Check the installer: Choose a build for your operating system and CPU architecture, and confirm any version-specific system requirements.
- Compare workflow needs: 5.12 includes the features described above; 5.13 adds later changes, including its different default working profile.
Installing RawTherapee 5.12
The 5.12 download page lists Windows, Linux, macOS, and source-code options. On Linux, RawTherapee recommends installing through the distribution’s package manager; its AppImage is an alternative if 5.12 is unavailable there.

The macOS requirements below apply specifically to the 5.12 build: macOS Sequoia 15.4 or later on Apple Silicon, or macOS Monterey 12.3 or later on Intel x86_64. The project says to install the application in /Applications. Check the 5.12 release page for the relevant download; do not assume these requirements apply to later builds.
