A smart electrical panel adds monitoring, communications, and sometimes control to the panel that distributes electricity to a building’s circuits. Depending on the product, it can show circuit-level energy use, manage selected loads, or coordinate with solar, batteries, and backup power. The term covers several different designs, so features and installation requirements vary.
What does a smart electrical panel do?
A conventional electrical panel distributes power from the utility service to branch circuits. A smart panel or panel-based energy-management system adds ways to measure electrical conditions, communicate information, and—in some systems—control equipment. Schneider Electric describes these functions as measurement, connection to energy-management platforms, and support for efficiency through real-time monitoring and control: Electrical Installation Guide.
Depending on the system, information may be available at the panel or through a network-connected interface. A user or building operator may be able to see energy use, power, equipment status, and alarms. Some systems also let the user or system control selected equipment or switchgear; monitoring alone does not mean that a panel can actively manage loads.
What products are called smart panels?
In residential settings, “smart electrical panel” can describe several forms of equipment rather than one standardized product:

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- Smart breakers: Breakers add monitoring or control for particular circuits.
- Add-on controls: A controller or energy-management system works with an existing conventional panel.
- Replacement panels: A new panel integrates monitoring and potentially load-control functions.
These options differ in the number of circuits they cover, whether they actively manage capacity, and how they integrate with other equipment. Berkeley ECOBlock discusses smart-panel applications and their role in managing connected loads: Berkeley ECOBlock. Eaton also describes smart-panel applications including retrofits, panel replacement, subpanels, EV charging, and whole-home electrification: Eaton smart-panel information.
How does smart-panel load management work?
A system that supports active load management measures—or receives information about—power use and manages selected loads against a service or panel limit. For example, it might temporarily defer EV charging while higher-priority household loads are running, then allow charging when capacity becomes available. Some products can also coordinate with solar or batteries, schedule loads around time-of-use rates, or participate in a demand-response program. Availability depends on the product, its configuration, and any applicable local program.

Load management is not the same as creating more electrical capacity. It changes how selected loads are operated to stay within a limit; whether that helps with a particular home depends on the service, panel, appliances, and system design. Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory’s 2026 builder guide describes smart panels as energy-management and power-control systems that can control loads to meet an installer-established service limit: LBNL builder guide.
Can a smart panel provide backup power?
No. A smart panel does not generate electricity, and installing one does not by itself guarantee that power will be available during an outage. Backup requires compatible generation or storage equipment—such as a generator or battery—and an appropriate electrical configuration.

When connected to suitable backup equipment, some smart-panel systems can help identify or manage critical loads. Berkeley ECOBlock describes app-based reconfiguration of backed-up appliances and prioritization of critical loads. Which circuits can be backed up depends on the supported equipment and the installation.
When might a smart electrical panel be useful?
It may be worth considering if a household wants more than basic circuit protection—for example, circuit-level visibility, control of selected loads, or coordination among new electric appliances, an EV charger, solar, and batteries. The useful features are the ones that fit the equipment and goals of the household, not simply the features included in a product.

A full smart panel is not automatically necessary to address a service-capacity constraint. LBNL’s 2026 builder guide says that if the only goal is addressing the 200A service challenge—and the customer does not need other energy-management features or an interface—a smart panel may be an unnecessarily expensive option. For controlling one or two loads, a smart breaker or automatic load-sharing device may be a narrower alternative. An electrician can determine whether any of these approaches suits the site.

How much does a smart electrical panel cost?
Published figures provide rough context, not a current quote for a particular home:
| Figure | Source and context |
|---|---|
| $2,500–$4,000 | ENERGY STAR’s approximate smart-panel cost range in homeowner electric-readiness guidance accessed in 2026. It is not an installed quote and may not reflect current local prices: ENERGY STAR electric-ready homes guidance. |
| $3,000 or more for hardware alone | LBNL’s 2026 builder guide gives this typical figure while discussing a smart panel as an expensive way to address a 200A service challenge when other energy-management features are not needed. It is not a complete installed cost: LBNL builder guide. |
Equipment, installation scope, and local conditions affect the price. Get a site-specific quote rather than treating either figure as a guaranteed price.
Will a smart panel save money on energy?
It may help a household monitor use or control loads, but that does not establish a particular bill saving. A 2023 U.S. Department of Energy/NREL project presentation projected 10% utility-bill savings for typical homes as a project benefit. That was a projection, not a demonstrated universal result or a guarantee to purchasers; the presentation described simulations, hardware-in-the-loop laboratory experiments, and a field demonstration as its validation approach: DOE/NREL project presentation.
What should a homeowner check before installation?
ENERGY STAR advises homeowners to inspect the main-breaker rating and available breaker slots, then review capacity and planned appliances with a licensed electrician. Local permitting restrictions may apply to electrical work. These checks are a starting point, not a way to determine from a listing or a photo that a product will fit or prevent a panel upgrade.
Ask a licensed electrician to assess product compatibility, service and load calculations, installation scope, permit requirements, and applicable code requirements for the property. Electrical-panel work should be evaluated and performed in accordance with local rules.
