Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsThe clearest way to demonstrate basic deep-learning skills is to build one small, reproducible project and show the full workflow: prepare data, train a model, evaluate it on held-out examples, and make predictions with the saved model. A compact image-classification project is a practical starting point; a well-explained notebook or repository can show what you understand without requiring a specialized computer or a claim about hiring outcomes.
What a basic deep-learning demonstration should show
A model name, a training screenshot, or a set of sample predictions is not enough to show how you worked. Make the decisions and steps inspectable, from the task definition through inference. PyTorch’s Learn the Basics tutorial puts the workflow plainly: “Most machine learning workflows involve working with data, creating models, optimizing model parameters, and saving the trained models.”
- Define the task. State the input, what the model should predict, and what a correct prediction means.
- Inspect and prepare the data. Describe the dataset and its labels, show how you inspect examples, explain preprocessing, and state how you split the data.
- Build the model. Use a small neural network or adapt a suitable tutorial model, and explain its role in the task.
- Train it visibly. Include the optimization loop and enough information to understand how training proceeds.
- Evaluate on held-out data. Report an appropriate evaluation result, show predictions, and discuss at least one limitation or error pattern.
- Save and use the model. Demonstrate loading the trained model and using it to make an inference.
- Make the work runnable. Add a short introduction or README with the environment, dependencies, run instructions, and expected output.
These parts turn a demonstration from “I followed a tutorial” into an explanation of what the code does and why you made its choices. The point is not to claim expertise from one small project; it is to make basic competence verifiable.
Choose a project small enough to explain
Image classification is a good first option because inputs, labels, and predictions are easy to inspect. PyTorch’s beginner tutorial uses FashionMNIST to walk through a classifier workflow. Its official examples also include transfer learning, audio classification, character-level text classification, and small reinforcement-learning environments. These are alternative directions, not a ranking of which project is best.

| Project direction | What you can demonstrate | Questions to answer in the write-up |
|---|---|---|
| Image classification | Inspecting images and labels, preprocessing, training a classifier, and examining mistakes | Are the classes clear? What kinds of images does the model confuse? |
| Transfer learning | Adapting an existing model to a defined classification task | What did you reuse, what did you change, and how did you evaluate it? |
| Audio classification | Preparing audio inputs and mapping them to categories | How are audio examples represented and processed? Which errors matter? |
| Character-level text classification | Turning text into model inputs and predicting a category | What is the label, how is text prepared, and where can the classifier be misleading? |
| Small reinforcement-learning environment | Showing an agent’s interaction with an environment and how its behavior is assessed | What counts as success, and how do you distinguish a useful result from a lucky run? |
Use the choice that lets you explain the data and evaluation most clearly. A project is easier to inspect when the task fits in a short description, the inputs can be examined, the evaluation is more than a few appealing examples, and the limitations are understandable.
Make data handling and evaluation visible
Do not treat the dataset as an unexplained download. Show a few representative records or inputs, identify the target labels, and explain the preprocessing that transforms raw examples into model inputs. State which data is used for training and which is held out for evaluation, and give a brief reason for the split. If your preprocessing involves learned statistics or transformations, make clear that they are derived without using held-out evaluation data.

- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (5-in-1, 4K HDMI), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
Hugging Face’s beginner Datasets tutorials cover loading and preparing data, inspecting contents and splits, preprocessing, and sharing a dataset to the Hub. They assume basic Python and familiarity with a framework such as PyTorch or TensorFlow; readers who want a broader course context can follow the documentation’s reference to Chapter 5 of the Hugging Face course.
For evaluation, choose a measure that fits the task and state what it means. Pair an overall result with examples of correct and incorrect predictions where useful. Explain at least one limitation: for example, a class the model confuses or a kind of input not represented in the dataset. Do not present a handful of selected predictions as proof of general performance.

Package it so another person can inspect or run it
A Jupyter notebook is useful when you want the reader to see data, code, and output together. A small repository with a notebook and plain Python source can make the workflow equally accessible. PyTorch’s tutorial provides both a downloadable notebook and Python source, as well as a zipped example.
Include concise run instructions and identify dependencies rather than assuming the reader has your environment. The PyTorch tutorial offers a “Run in Google Colab” option and says local execution requires PyTorch and TorchVision to be set up. That gives you two documented routes: a hosted notebook or local execution. The basic demonstration does not require buying a local GPU.

- Give the project a one-sentence task description.
- List the software dependencies and how to start the notebook or script.
- Explain where data comes from and what setup, if any, is needed to obtain it.
- Say what output to expect, such as an evaluation summary or a prediction from the saved model.
- Keep the code and explanation organized so the reader can follow data preparation, training, evaluation, and inference.
Show your decisions, not just copied tutorial code
Adapting an official tutorial is a reasonable way to start, but make your contribution and understanding explicit. Explain why the task and dataset fit the project, what preprocessing you chose, how you assessed the result, and what you would not conclude from it. Be candid about limitations rather than implying that a small demonstration proves broad capability.
For a supported next step after the project, the Dive into Deep Learning arXiv record describes an open-source book with runnable notebook code. It can complement practice, but the project itself can be built around the freely available PyTorch documentation and hosted notebook option.
