The phrase describes how something became a practical standard; it does not, by itself, mean that following it is legally required.
What “de facto standard” means
In technology, a de facto standard is a specification or technology that becomes a common reference through adoption and influence in a particular market or community. The National Academies describes the process as specifications gaining market share until they acquire authority or influence. WIPO likewise discusses technologies that become dominant through broad implementation and public acceptance without formal adoption by a standards body.
In plain terms, widespread use can coordinate expectations: people and organizations start designing, communicating, or operating around the same approach. Popularity alone is not enough; the approach must be recognized or influential in the relevant setting.
How it differs from a de jure standard
The main distinction is the route by which a standard gains standing:

Formal approval and legal force are separate questions. A voluntary standard can become mandatory if legislation or regulation incorporates it; the effect depends on the applicable jurisdiction and legal instrument. Contractual adoption can also make a specification relevant to the parties covered by that contract.
The categories can change over time: a specification may first become dominant through use and later be adopted or legitimized through a formal standards-development process.

How a de facto standard emerges
- A specification or practice is used. People or organizations choose it in a competitive market or adopt it as a convention.
- Adoption spreads. Wider implementation makes the approach more influential in the relevant market or community.
- Others coordinate around it. Participants begin designing products, exchanging information, or operating on the assumption that others use the same approach.
- It becomes a practical reference. Its influence gives it standard-like standing, whether or not formal approval has occurred.
Examples—and why context matters
IBM PC architecture
The National Academies’ 1995 report identifies IBM PC architecture, established and promoted by IBM beginning in 1981, as an example of a de facto industry standard. This is a historical example from that report, not evidence of present-day market dominance.
QWERTY and driving customs
The Society for Standards Professionals lists the QWERTY keyboard and driving customs as common examples. They illustrate that a de facto standard can be a convention as well as a technical specification. Driving customs, in particular, vary by place; an example should be understood in its relevant jurisdiction rather than as a universal practice.

Whether something functions as a de facto standard depends on the users, market, sector, or place being discussed. Calling a product popular does not establish that it is a standard.

- Adoption and interoperability: Which approach do the people, systems, or partners you need to work with actually support?
- Formal approval and governance: Is there a recognized standards body or formal process behind the specification, and who maintains it?
- Legal or contractual status: Does a law, regulation, or contract require or incorporate it in your jurisdiction or agreement?
- Transition and switching: What would it take to change approaches, and would doing so affect compatibility with existing systems or partners?
