An .mp4 file can fail in a browser because MP4 identifies the container, not the exact audio and video formats stored inside it. Playback depends on the browser and operating system being able to read the container and decode each track—including its codec profile and level. A working MP4 on one device may therefore fail on another.

What the container does—and what the codecs do

A media container packages encoded audio and video tracks together with information such as timing and metadata. MP4 is one such container. The codecs are the methods used to encode and decode the tracks inside it. One MP4 file might contain AVC (also called H.264) video and AAC audio; another can contain a different codec combination.

The file extension or MIME type can identify or suggest the container, but it does not fully describe the codecs or their configurations. MDN cautions that a browser’s support for a container does not mean it supports every codec that container can hold. That is why “it is an MP4” is not enough to establish browser compatibility.

Why the same MP4 can work in one browser but not another

Different codec support

Browsers and operating systems do not all provide the same decoders. MDN notes, for example, that Firefox’s AVC support depends on codecs available through the operating system and its media infrastructure. The same file can consequently behave differently across systems. See MDN’s Web video codec guide for browser and platform compatibility details.

  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Profile, level, and device limits

A codec name alone does not describe every decoding requirement. A codec’s profile and level constrain features and the resolutions or bitrates a decoder can handle. The device’s hardware decoding capabilities can also matter, even when the browser and platform nominally support that codec family. MDN’s Codec selection discusses these considerations alongside encoding efficiency and licensing.

Audio can be the problem too

Video and audio are separate tracks. A browser may handle the video codec but not the audio codec, or vice versa. Check both tracks rather than assuming that a visible video image proves the whole file is compatible.

Which formats should you use for web video?

For broad compatibility, MDN describes MP4 with AVC/H.264 video and AAC audio as a widely supported pairing. It is not a guarantee for every browser, operating system, profile, level, or device. WebM with AV1 video and Opus audio is another option for typical sites, with older Apple devices a compatibility caveat.

There is no universally best choice for every audience. When selecting delivery formats, weigh target browsers and devices, codec profile and level, resolution and bitrate, encoding efficiency, licensing, and whether you can provide alternate encodes. MDN says HEVC can compress more efficiently than H.264, but browser support has gaps outside Apple platforms; MDN does not recommend it as a general-purpose encoding target.

How to diagnose an MP4 that will not play

  1. Check the actual tracks. Inspect the file to identify its video codec and configuration, and its audio codec and configuration. The .mp4 extension alone cannot tell you these details.
  2. Check the affected environment. Compare the track codecs and their profiles or levels with support for the specific browser and operating system. Consider whether the device can decode the resolution and bitrate in the file.
  3. Serve a compatible encode if needed. If the target environment cannot handle a track or configuration, create an encode it supports or provide an alternate source. MDN’s Transcoding assets for Media Source Extensions explains a web-media transcoding workflow.
  4. Test the page’s source list. If using multiple encodes, make sure the page actually includes each alternate and that its declared media type and codec information match the file.

What HTML video fallbacks can—and cannot—do

A <video> element can contain multiple <source> children. The browser tries the sources sequentially and can move to a later source when an earlier one fails. A type attribute can declare the media type; a codecs parameter can provide more specific codec information. Consult MDN’s HTML video element and HTML source element references for the markup details.

A fallback only helps if a suitable alternate is present. Listing the same incompatible file twice does not add another decoding option.

How WebCodecs differs from ordinary video playback

For ordinary file playback, the browser’s HTML video pipeline handles demuxing—the separation of tracks from their container—and decoding. WebCodecs works at the codec level and does not parse file containers. A workflow that feeds a media file into WebCodecs therefore needs a separate demuxing step to extract encoded chunks; writing processed chunks back to a media file requires muxing logic or a library. MDN explains the distinction in Video processing concepts and the WebCodecs API.
