An augmented reality (AR) laptop is a laptop-style computer or setup that shows its desktop through glasses as a virtual screen, rather than relying only on a conventional built-in display. You use familiar input, such as a keyboard and trackpad, while viewing a workspace through the glasses. Sightful’s Spacetop is one example—but its dedicated Spacetop G1 hardware and the company’s newer Spacetop for Windows software are different products.
How an AR laptop works
The computer renders its screen inside glasses worn by the user. The virtual display appears in the wearer’s field of view, while a physical keyboard and trackpad provide familiar controls. This arrangement can create a large workspace without a laptop panel; the display is private to the wearer in the ordinary sense that other people cannot see the virtual image directly.
That design differs from a conventional laptop, which has a physical screen attached to the computer. It also differs from a general-purpose VR headset: products such as Spacetop retain keyboard-and-trackpad interaction and are designed around a spatial desktop. That is a product-design distinction, not a universal technical definition of every AR laptop.
What the Spacetop example shows
The original Spacetop
Deutsche Telekom’s February 2024 account described the original Spacetop as a display-free computer with a keyboard and trackpad, webcam, Spacetop operating system, and bundled XREAL Light glasses. Its reported configuration included a Qualcomm Snapdragon XR2 Gen 1, 8 GB of RAM, and 128 GB of storage; Deutsche Telekom reported battery life of more than five hours. These are specifications and claims for that historical model, not current specifications for every Spacetop product. Deutsche Telekom’s Spacetop overview.

Spacetop G1
WIRED’s May 2024 hands-on report described the Spacetop G1 as customized XREAL glasses connected to a laptop-like keyboard-and-trackpad base. The reported demo specifications were dual OLED displays at 1,920 × 1,080 pixels per eye, a 50-degree field of view, a 90 Hz refresh rate, 16 GB of RAM, 128 GB of storage, and a Qualcomm Snapdragon QCS8550. Those figures describe the G1 as reported in 2024, not the original Spacetop or Sightful’s current Windows software. WIRED’s Spacetop G1 hands-on report.
Spacetop for Windows
Sightful’s current website presents Spacetop for Windows as software that turns an existing laptop into a private spatial workspace. That is a different configuration from the dedicated Spacetop G1 computer described in 2024 coverage; the G1’s bundled hardware and specifications should not be attributed to the Windows software. What an AR laptop may offer—and what it requires
- A virtual workspace: Glasses can present a large desktop-style canvas without a conventional laptop display.
- Familiar input: The documented Spacetop designs pair the virtual screen with keyboard-and-trackpad interaction.
- Wearable hardware: The user must wear glasses, and a dedicated setup may also involve carrying a separate computing base and managing cables.
- Display trade-offs: In WIRED’s 2024 G1 demo, text could look fuzzy when brought very close, and the field of view could feel small. The report also discussed weight and cabling as practical considerations. These are review observations, not universal measurements for all AR glasses.
- Surroundings remain relevant: The concept is a spatial workspace viewed through glasses, not a guarantee that every model will remain stable or work equally well in every environment.
What evidence says about everyday use
A 2025 study by Yi Fei Cheng and co-authors followed 14 people using Spacetop Early Access in 40-minute daily sessions over two weeks, for 103 hours of AR-based work in total. Its abstract identifies task demands, environmental constraints, social dynamics, and ergonomic considerations as factors shaping participants’ use. The study is a small, bounded account of one product and group; it does not establish that AR laptops improve productivity, posture, or health for users generally. The 2025 study abstract on arXiv.
