Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteShort answer: an ONNX opset number is not a guarantee that an RKNN conversion will work. Compatibility depends on the exact RKNN-Toolkit2 release and on the operators, attributes, shapes, and data types in your graph. For example, RKNN-Toolkit2 1.6.0 release notes state support for ONNX opsets 12–19, but that release’s operator support page also lists unsupported operators and points to additional compiler restrictions.
What does RKNN-Toolkit2 opset compatibility mean?
An ONNX opset identifies a version of the operator definitions used by a model. A toolkit’s documented opset range tells you which ONNX model versions it says it can work with; it does not establish that every graph using those versions can be converted. Conversion can still be blocked by an unsupported operator or by a constraint on an operator’s attributes or inputs.
The official RKNN-Toolkit2 1.6.0 release notes say, “Support ONNX model of OPSET 12~19.” Treat that as a claim about version 1.6.0, not a permanent compatibility promise for every release. The 1.6.0 operator support page is framed around opset 19 and refers readers to a separate compiler operator restrictions document for further constraints.
Why the operator list matters as much as the opset
A graph can use an opset within a release’s stated range and still contain operations that the toolkit does not support, or uses in a way that falls outside a documented qualification. In its 1.6.0 ONNX operator table, RKNN-Toolkit2 marks Abs, Acos, And, several bitwise operators, and Expand as unsupported. The same table qualifies GRU with batch size 1.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- Compare the graph’s actual operators and attributes with the ONNX support table for the exact toolkit release.
- Check the matching compiler restrictions document as well; the operator table itself directs users to further restrictions.
- Do not infer that an operation is usable merely because its name appears in a support list. Check any stated conditions against your graph.
These examples describe the 1.6.0 documentation. They are not a substitute for checking the documents that match another release and target.

| Reported case | What the report says | What it establishes |
|---|---|---|
| RKNN-Toolkit2 v2.2.0, September 25, 2024 | A user reported: E load_onnx: Unsupport onnx opset 16, need <= 15! |
That conversion path rejected opset 16 with an explicit upper limit. It does not establish the complete compatibility range for v2.2.0 or other releases. |
| RKNN-Toolkit2 v1.6.0, December 31, 2025 | A user reported a log recommending opset 19 for a PyTorch-exported model using opset 14. The excerpt then showed model-loading and optimization stages. | The log was a recommendation, not by itself a rejection. It does not prove that every opset 14 model fails or that the converted model ultimately ran on hardware. |
Read the message in context. A hard error that names a limit is different from a recommendation emitted during a particular model conversion. Neither one should be generalized beyond the toolkit version and graph involved.
How to diagnose a conversion failure
- Record the exact stack. Note the RKNN-Toolkit2 release, ONNX exporter and opset, model or graph revision, target chip or board, input shapes, and data types. Without these details, a result is difficult to reproduce or compare.
- Confirm the model’s opset imports. Check the ONNX model metadata rather than relying only on the exporter setting or a remembered configuration.
- Inventory the graph. Identify its operators and relevant attributes, then compare them with the operator support and compiler restriction documents for the toolkit release you are using.
- Run conversion and inspect the first failure. Preserve the complete log. If conversion fails, use the earliest failing operation and its parameters to narrow the issue; a later error may only be a consequence of the first one.
- Check output agreement. Compare the converted model’s outputs with the source-framework model using the inputs and tolerances appropriate to your application. The cited project material supplies no universal numerical pass threshold.
- Validate on the target. Test inference on the Rockchip board or chip you intend to deploy to, rather than treating a successful computer-side conversion as proof of deployment readiness.
What should a useful compatibility baseline include?
A useful baseline is a reproducible record of one exact graph on one exact software and hardware stack—not just a statement such as “RKNN supports opset 19.” Record:

The RKNN-Toolkit2 project describes a workflow that converts models on a computer and runs inference on a Rockchip development board. Its README, accessed October 4, 2026, lists RK3588 among supported platforms and identifies v2.3.2 as the latest release at that time. The README is mutable, so verify its current release and platform list when selecting a stack. These project details do not establish that every model converts or performs acceptably on every listed platform.

Start with the opset range documented for the RKNN-Toolkit2 release you have actually installed, then check the graph against that release’s operator and compiler restrictions. If a conversion log recommends a different opset, treat it as a prompt to test that export setting—not proof that the current model is unsupported. Compare conversions using the same graph, inputs, target, and validation method so that the result is attributable to the export change.

There is no universal opset setting that can be recommended from the cited release notes and reports alone. The right baseline is the highest-confidence combination you have verified: a documented toolkit release, a compatible graph, acceptable numerical agreement, and successful inference on the deployment target.
