A field-programmable gate array (FPGA) is a reconfigurable semiconductor chip that can be configured after manufacture to implement different digital circuits. Its programmable logic and routing are set by configuration data, so developers can change the circuit the chip implements without fabricating a new physical layout.

How an FPGA works

Think of an FPGA as a configurable fabric: logic elements perform operations, and programmable routing connects them into a circuit. A design is described in configuration data that determines how the available resources behave and how signals travel between them.

Unlike a conventional processor, which executes instructions on a largely fixed hardware structure, an FPGA can be configured so that its hardware resources form a circuit tailored to a design. The specific configuration process and capabilities vary among FPGA families.

Logic and stored state

A lookup table (LUT) implements a Boolean logic function of its inputs. Registers store state, enabling sequential logic such as circuits that track values across clock cycles. The names and organization of these building blocks are not universal: Intel uses the term adaptive logic module (ALM), while AMD documentation describes configurable logic blocks (CLBs) and related logic elements.

  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Other resources on the chip

Many FPGAs supplement programmable logic with dedicated resources such as RAM, digital signal processing (DSP) blocks, clocking, and I/O. Which resources are present—and how many—depends on the device family and model. These dedicated blocks are part of the chip architecture; they are not all implemented from the same general-purpose logic fabric.

Why it is called “field-programmable”

“Field-programmable” means the device’s function can be set after the chip has been manufactured. Rather than making a new physical chip layout for every design, a developer loads configuration data to define the circuit. The configuration technology, loading process, and ability to change a configuration vary by device; the term does not mean every FPGA uses the same configuration memory or supports the same reconfiguration behavior.

FPGA vs. CPU, GPU, and ASIC

The main distinction is how the hardware is defined. A CPU or GPU has a fixed hardware structure on which software programs run. An FPGA can be configured to implement a circuit with hardware resources arranged for a particular design. An application-specific integrated circuit (ASIC) is also custom hardware, but it is built for a defined purpose rather than being configured from an FPGA’s programmable fabric.

Device type How it performs a task What the design trade-off looks like
CPU or GPU Runs programs on a fixed hardware structure. Software uses the device’s existing architecture; the hardware structure itself is not configured into a new circuit.
FPGA Uses configuration data to arrange programmable logic and routing into a circuit. Offers configurable hardware, with capabilities and resources dependent on the FPGA device.
ASIC Uses custom hardware designed for a specific task. Intel’s FPGA Architecture Overview says an ASIC generally outperforms an FPGA on a specific task, while requiring significant development time and money. That is a broad trade-off, not a guarantee for every design.

There is no universal performance or cost ranking that applies to every design. The appropriate choice depends on the task and the value of configurable hardware compared with a fixed or specialized implementation.

Where FPGAs are used

IEEE identifies telecommunications, defense, data centers, and embedded systems as sectors that use FPGAs. These examples show the range of possible applications; they do not mean an FPGA is automatically the best choice for a particular project.

For hands-on learning, an FPGA development board can provide a way to configure real hardware. Before choosing one, check that its device family, interfaces, and supported development tools match the project.

What to check in a specific FPGA

“FPGA” describes a class of configurable chips, not one standard architecture. Vendor names, logic organization, available dedicated blocks, and configuration behavior vary. For device-specific details, consult the relevant vendor documentation: AMD’s FPGA Architecture – UG1291 and CLB Overview – UG474 describe AMD architectures, while Intel’s FPGA Architecture Overview covers Intel terminology and architecture.
