Organizations should manage browser extensions as software running inside their managed browser environment—not leave employees to guess which add-ons are safe. Extensions may access browser capabilities and website data, and CISA’s indexed guidance warns that they can collect data or perform malicious actions. Effective oversight requires an inventory, a review and approval process, centrally enforced browser policies, and ongoing monitoring.

Why browser extensions are an organizational security concern

An extension runs in the browser employees use for work. Its declared permissions can give it access to browser capabilities or website hosts, so its potential reach depends in part on what it requests and where it can operate. CISA’s 2024 indexed guidance for non-federal organizations identifies extensions as a potential security concern because they may collect data or perform malicious actions. The available material does not establish how frequently incidents occur, so a prevalence figure should not be inferred.

Reviewing permissions and host access helps administrators understand an extension’s requested scope, but it is not a complete safety test. A limited permission list does not, by itself, establish that an extension or its publisher is trustworthy. Consider the extension’s purpose, publisher, update behavior, and accountable business owner as well.

How IT can control extensions across the company

Major browser vendors provide administrative policies for managing extension installation. The available controls vary by browser, version, platform, and profile configuration, so validate them in the organization’s actual deployment rather than assuming one policy behaves identically everywhere.

Browser management option Documented capabilities Important qualification
Google Chrome Enterprise Core Google describes centralized browser policy and settings management, extension reporting, employee request workflows for administrative approval or denial, and controls for extension installation, blocking, and version management. Google also lists integrations with Intune, VMware Workspace ONE, and Jamf. These are vendor-described capabilities, not an independent assessment of effectiveness. See Chrome Enterprise Core and its browser management information.
Microsoft Edge administrative policies Microsoft’s policy reference includes settings to allow specific extensions, block extensions, silently install extensions, define installation sources, and block particular installation types. Policy applicability can depend on Edge version and profile conditions. Check the current entry and deployment context in Microsoft Edge Browser Policy Documentation.

For Chrome, do not use the legacy ExtensionInstallWhitelist policy as current setup guidance: Google marks it deprecated and directs administrators to ExtensionInstallAllowlist. See Google’s legacy policy page for that notice.

A practical extension governance process

  1. Build an inventory. Record installed extensions and, where the management platform exposes the information, the browser, version, user or group, and installation source. Identify gaps in visibility before setting approval rules.
  2. Review each extension in context. Document its business purpose, publisher, requested permissions, host access, update behavior, and business owner. Treat access scope as a risk signal, not a verdict that an extension is safe or unsafe.
  3. Set a baseline and request path. Define a small approved set for common needs and tell employees how to request additional extensions. Apply consistent criteria: business need, data access, accountable ownership, and when the approval should be reviewed again.
  4. Enforce decisions centrally. Use the policies available in each supported browser to allow, block, or force-install extensions as appropriate. Check current vendor documentation and test the policy on the organization’s platforms, versions, and profile configurations before broad deployment.
  5. Monitor and reassess. Track changes in inventory and versions. Revisit an approval if ownership changes, permissions materially change, an incident occurs, or the business need ends.
  6. Explain the policy to employees. Make clear what is approved and how to request a useful tool. A visible route to review is more workable than a blanket prohibition that leaves employees without a way to raise legitimate needs.

What to compare before standardizing

Organizations often use more than one browser, operating system, identity profile, or endpoint-management platform. Compare the controls against that real environment before adopting a single workflow.
