Gitea 1.24.0, announced on June 4, 2025, added API capabilities for package versions and Gitea Actions, changed Markdown behavior, and introduced new administrative controls—including an instance-wide two-factor authentication policy. It also changed how Gitea reads Git configuration, so administrators and API users should review those changes before upgrading. Gitea 1.24 is a historical release, not the latest release surfaced as of October 4, 2026.

What changed in Gitea 1.24?

Gitea’s 1.24.0 announcement groups the release around new features, usability improvements, and performance work. For administrators and developers, the most consequential changes fall into four areas: APIs, Markdown rendering, security and administration, and operational behavior. The release also adds issue and project features, including sorting issues by exclusive-label priority, a fullscreen project Kanban view, and organization-level worktime summaries that can be filtered by time, repositories, milestones, and members. Gitea describes performance improvements to several paths, including pull-request list APIs, package queries, feeds, and commit lists, but does not publish a quantified speedup.

Read the official Gitea 1.24.0 announcement and changelog for the full release notes.

What new APIs does Gitea 1.24 add?

The additions cover package automation, Actions administration and artifacts, repository contents, and issue or organization operations. The announcement identifies these feature groups but is not a complete endpoint reference; consult the API documentation for exact routes, permissions, and schemas.

  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Package version automation

New endpoints let clients list package versions and retrieve a package’s latest version. Gitea also changed the casing of the relevant size field from Size to size. Clients that parse package-version responses should check the actual response shape and update any code that depends on the old casing.

Gitea Actions artifacts, runners, and workflows

New Actions APIs support listing, retrieving, and deleting artifacts, as well as downloading artifacts as ZIP files. Administrators can generate runner registration tokens and manage runners through the API. The release also adds an API route to trigger workflows that use workflow_dispatch.

Before an upgrade, test integrations against the target instance. In particular, verify package response casing and exercise any Actions artifact, runner, workflow-trigger, or content-request calls your automation uses.

Did Gitea 1.24 change Markdown rendering?

Yes. Gitea says Markdown rendering was adjusted to better match GitHub, but that does not establish exact rendering parity. The announcement calls out configurable detection of math code blocks as a breaking-change area: problematic syntaxes are disabled by default. It also lists relative links to raw paths, a copy button separated from code blocks for improved readability, and the ability for issue, pull-request, and comment Markdown to expand sub-issue lists and show issue titles.

If your instance relies on math rendering or custom Markdown content, review the Gitea Markdown documentation and test representative pages after upgrading. The release announcement does not enumerate every parser or rendering edge case.

What should administrators check before upgrading?

Plan the global two-factor authentication policy

Gitea 1.24 adds the global security.TWO_FACTOR_AUTH setting, which can require TOTP or WebAuthn two-factor authentication for all users. The announcement says users who log in without 2FA can still visit Explore but cannot read or write repositories through the web interface or API. Treat this as an instance-wide access-policy change: plan enrollment, communicate the change, and consider its effect on users and integrations before enabling it.

Move relevant system Git settings into Gitea’s configuration

Gitea 1.24 sets GIT_CONFIG_NOSYSTEM=1 for Git commands and no longer uses /etc/gitconfig. If your deployment relies on settings in that file, identify the affected options and move them to Gitea’s internal Git configuration, usually {AppDataPath}/home/.gitconfig, as described in the release notes.

Update log processing and administrative automation

The router log format changed, which may affect log parsers, dashboards, or alert rules that assume the previous format. The release also adds a --fullname argument to gitea admin user create, a --user-type bot option, LDAP CLI flags corresponding to UI options, and performance tracing support. Review scripts and operational tooling that interact with these interfaces.

Check private-repository access and generated URLs

The release supports limited public access to code, issues, and wikis for private or unlisted repositories, and adds descriptions for the relevant private-repository public-access settings. It also makes public URL generation configurable. Review these controls against your access policies and deployment configuration rather than assuming the defaults fit your instance.

Choose an upgrade target using current release and security information

Gitea 1.24.1, announced June 19, 2025, included follow-up fixes such as Markdown wrapping and a pull-request API panic when the head repository is deleted. The 1.24.7 announcement later described security fixes for an LFS authentication bypass, arbitrary-file access through malicious template repositories, and acceptance of invalidated OAuth2 tokens. These are reasons not to make an upgrade decision from the 1.24.0 announcement alone.

As of October 4, 2026, an official announcement for Gitea 1.26.2 dated May 20, 2026 had surfaced. That does not establish the complete support policy or whether a newer release exists. Check the official Gitea release announcements and upgrade guidance for the version and security advice applicable when you plan your change.
