Experienced C# developers routinely reach for a small set of habits that make code safer and easier to read: pattern matching, explicit null handling, LINQ for natural collection queries, asynchronous I/O, targeted exception handling, judicious var, and modern syntax used with restraint. These are practical choices, not a universal ranking; use the form that makes intent clearest and fits your project’s configured C# version.
1. Match values while checking their type
Pattern matching lets a branch test a value and, when the test succeeds, expose it in a useful form. For example:
if (value is string text)
{
Console.WriteLine(text.Length);
}
The is expression checks whether value is a string; inside the successful branch, text is already typed as string. This avoids a separate type test followed by a cast. Pattern matching also supports richer branching as needed; choose it when it makes the logic easier to follow, not simply because it is newer. Microsoft’s C# how-to guidance covers safe type-oriented tests and conversions.
2. Make null behavior explicit
Null handling is clearest when the code shows what should happen if a reference is absent. Nullable reference type annotations can communicate which references may be null, while operators express common responses directly:

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
customer?.Nameconditionally accessesName; ifcustomeris null, the expression returns null rather than accessing the member.name ?? "Unknown"supplies a fallback whennameis null.value is nulltests for null without invoking an overloaded==operator.
Use the null-forgiving operator (!) sparingly: it suppresses a nullable warning but does not make a null value safe at runtime. Microsoft explains these behaviors in its C# null operators reference.
3. Use LINQ for collection queries that read naturally
LINQ provides a compact way to filter, order, project, or aggregate collections. For example, when orders is a collection of orders:

var overdueIds = orders
.Where(order => order.DueDate < today)
.Select(order => order.Id);
This reads as a query: keep orders whose due date is before today, then select their IDs. Microsoft’s .NET Coding Conventions for C# recommends LINQ for collection manipulation as a readability aid. A loop may be clearer when the operation has complicated branching or side effects. The recommendation is about expressing intent; it does not establish a universal performance advantage over loops.
4. Await I/O instead of blocking while it is pending
Network requests, database access, and file operations are common I/O-bound tasks. Their completion depends on an external operation, so asynchronous methods let an application continue other work while waiting. A typical call looks like this:

string content = await httpClient.GetStringAsync(url);
When the task is pending, await suspends the enclosing async method without blocking the thread that evaluates it; control returns to the caller in the meantime. Awaiting does not make CPU-heavy calculations inherently faster. Microsoft describes suitable cases in its asynchronous programming scenarios and the behavior of await in the await operator reference.
5. Catch exceptions only where you can respond
An exception handler should have a meaningful job: recover, add useful context, or report the failure at an appropriate boundary. Catch a specific exception when the code knows how to handle that case:

try
{
return await File.ReadAllTextAsync(path);
}
catch (FileNotFoundException)
{
return "";
}
This example is appropriate only if a missing file genuinely means the caller should receive an empty string. If that would conceal a failure or produce misleading data, let the exception propagate or handle it at a layer that can make a better decision. Broad catch (Exception) blocks that merely suppress errors make failures harder to diagnose. Microsoft’s coding conventions recommend catching exceptions that can be properly handled and using specific types for meaningful errors.
6. Use var when the type is apparent
var asks the compiler to infer a local variable’s type from its initializer; it does not make the variable dynamically typed. It is a reasonable choice when the expression makes the type obvious:

var names = new List<string>();
When the initializer does not make the type clear, an explicit declaration can reduce guesswork:
decimal total = CalculateTotal();
Whether the type is obvious depends on the surrounding code and the method’s name and return type. Microsoft’s C# conventions frame this as a readability choice, not a language requirement.
7. Choose modern syntax for clarity, not novelty
Modern C# features can express intent more directly, but a feature is useful only if it improves the code for its readers. Avoid outdated constructs when a supported, clearer alternative exists; avoid newer syntax when it obscures the logic or conflicts with the project’s target.
- Check the project’s target SDK and configured language version before adopting syntax introduced in a newer release.
- Prefer a straightforward expression over a compressed one when the latter takes longer to understand.
- Keep consistency with the surrounding codebase unless there is a concrete clarity or maintenance benefit to changing style.
The C# language reference documents language features; Microsoft’s coding conventions emphasize clear, simple code. As Microsoft Learn puts it: “Code that follows industry practices and established guidelines is easier to understand, maintain, and extend.”
