You can build a Windows Visual Studio extension around TickTick, but the five API surprises in the proposed title are not verified by the available authoritative information. TickTick’s developer documentation URL returned a 404 on October 4, 2026; that does not prove the API is gone, but it means endpoint behavior, authentication details, and other specifics should not be presented as fact without confirmation. Start with Visual Studio’s supported extension model, then verify the TickTick contract before implementing integration logic.
What you can establish before building
Microsoft’s extension-development guidance applies to Visual Studio on Windows, not Visual Studio Code. It identifies Visual Studio and the Visual Studio SDK as prerequisites for extension development. The SDK can be installed with Visual Studio or added afterward. Microsoft’s Visual Studio extension overview was last updated October 30, 2025.
The appropriate extension shape depends on what you want users to do inside the IDE:
- VSPackage: generally suited to commands, tool windows, and project-related functionality.
- MEF extension: generally suited to customizing the editor.
For C# and Visual Basic, the Visual Studio SDK includes an empty VSIX project template, with item templates for menu commands, tool windows, and editor extensions. A VSIX can be distributed as a file that users install by double-clicking, or published through Visual Studio Marketplace.

Choose an extension model for the feature
For a command or dedicated task window
If the goal is to trigger an action or show TickTick-related information in a dedicated window, Microsoft describes VSPackages as the general fit for commands and tool windows. This gives the integration a place in Visual Studio’s interface without requiring editor customization.
For editor behavior
If the feature changes or augments the code editor itself, MEF extensions are the general category Microsoft identifies for editor customization. Choose this route only when the integration genuinely needs to act within the editor.

Verify TickTick’s API before implementing it
The official developer documentation URL, https://developer.ticktick.com/docs#/openapi, returned 404 when checked on October 4, 2026. A failed page does not establish that TickTick’s API has been discontinued; it does mean this article cannot substantiate a current official API contract.
A third-party npm search result for @ticktick/ticktick-cli describes the package as wrapping “TickTick Open API v1.” Its search-result text also describes obtaining an API token in TickTick Web settings under Settings > Account > API Token and labels OAuth browser login as recommended. The package page could not be fetched, and these details were not corroborated by accessible official TickTick documentation. Treat them as unverified third-party metadata, not as current setup instructions or a guarantee of supported authentication.

Before coding against TickTick, establish these points from accessible official documentation or carefully recorded, reproducible tests:
- Which API endpoints are currently supported and what each request and response looks like.
- Which task and list fields can be read or changed.
- How pagination works, if responses can span multiple pages.
- Whether rate limits apply and how clients should respond to them.
- How credentials expire or can be revoked, and what authentication flows are supported.
- How synchronization behaves, including any conflicts or server-region considerations relevant to the implementation.
These are validation targets, not claims that TickTick has a particular limitation or behavior. Do not infer a “surprise” from an unavailable documentation page or a search-result snippet.

Plan Visual Studio compatibility and distribution
Visual Studio’s October 21, 2025 compatibility guidance describes Visual Studio 2026 as evaluating extension API versions at load time. It says Visual Studio 2026 supports API version 17.x and gives [17.0, 18.0) as an example installation target that needs no change for compatibility; new extension targets may use [17.0,). This guidance concerns VSIX-based extensions, not TickTick API versions. Microsoft encourages testing on Visual Studio 2026 and recommends VSIX distribution rather than MSI installers. Read the Visual Studio Blog’s compatibility guidance, published October 21, 2025.
The same post describes Visual Studio’s own extensibility APIs, not TickTick’s API. Tina Schrepfer, Principal Software Engineer Manager, wrote: “We understand that there are many parts to what make up the full API set for extending Visual Studio, and we are working on providing a clearer picture going forward.”

Compatibility targets are not a substitute for testing. Build and test the VSIX in the Visual Studio versions you intend to support, including Visual Studio 2026 if it is in scope. The blog’s migration guidance is not a promise that every extension will work without changes.
