The project described by Anuththara Wickramasekara is a Chrome extension for identifying signs of React Server Components (RSC) on websites, built with help from GitHub Copilot. Its “RSC Fingerprint Detector” is a reconnaissance tool, not proof that a site is vulnerable. That distinction matters: React’s CVE-2025-55182, known as React2Shell, was an unauthenticated remote-code-execution flaw rated CVSS 10.0, but detecting RSC or a framework associated with RSC does not establish that a particular deployment is affected.

What CVE-2025-55182 affected

React disclosed CVE-2025-55182 on December 3, 2025. The React Team said the flaw was in decoding payloads sent to React Server Function endpoints and rated it CVSS 10.0. An attacker could achieve remote code execution without authentication on an affected deployment. The advisory names three affected packages: react-server-dom-webpack, react-server-dom-parcel, and react-server-dom-turbopack. Its initially vulnerable versions were 19.0, 19.1.0, 19.1.1, and 19.2.0; the initial fixes were 19.0.1, 19.1.2, and 19.2.1. See the React Team’s December 3, 2025 advisory for the original scope and framework-specific update instructions.

This was not a vulnerability in every React website. The advisory identifies risk in applications using a server and an RSC-capable framework, bundler, or plugin. It also warns that an application could be vulnerable by supporting RSC even if it did not implement its own React Server Function endpoints. Frameworks and tools named in the advisory include Next.js, React Router, Waku, @parcel/rsc, @vitejs/plugin-rsc, and rwsdk.

The React Team’s instruction in that advisory was direct: “We recommend upgrading immediately.” Its package versions are historical initial fixes, not a complete guide to what should be deployed today.

What the reported RSC recon extension does

Wickramasekara’s DEV Community article describes a Manifest V3 Chrome extension called “RSC Fingerprint Detector,” intended to gather passive and active telemetry related to RSC and the React2Shell vulnerability class. The account is the author’s description of the implementation; the extension’s detection accuracy and safety have not been independently established here.

Passive signals

The article says the extension looks for clues in a page and its resources, including the window.__next_f object, script asset names containing react-server-dom-webpack, data-rsc DOM attributes, and observed response headers. These can suggest that a page or application uses RSC-related technology. They do not, by themselves, identify the deployed package version or show that the site is exploitable.

Active probing

The author also describes an asynchronous cross-origin fetch using a crafted X-RSC-Probe header and parsing the response content type. This is an active request, not merely passive inspection of page content. The article’s account does not establish that the request is harmless in every environment, avoids security alerts, or reliably distinguishes vulnerable systems. Do not treat a probe result as authorization to test a site; only assess systems you own or are explicitly authorized to evaluate.

Extension engineering

According to the article, the project moved from a synchronous Python snippet to an event-driven extension. The author describes adding IndexedDB persistence, messaging between extension contexts, and a Shadow DOM interface intended to isolate the UI. Those are implementation details, not evidence that the extension has been independently reviewed, is production-ready, or has a particular false-positive rate.

What Copilot contributed, according to the author

Wickramasekara says GitHub Copilot helped with Manifest V3 boilerplate, asynchronous messaging, IndexedDB, and network interception. The article presents Copilot as a coding aid in building the extension. It does not report a benchmark, independent code review, or experiment establishing a measured productivity gain or proving that generated code was secure.

That makes the useful takeaway narrower than a claim that Copilot validated a security tool: the author used it to assist with several implementation tasks, while correctness and safety still require review and testing by people responsible for the code and its deployment.

RSC detection is not vulnerability confirmation

Reconnaissance and vulnerability assessment answer different questions. A fingerprint may indicate that a site uses an RSC-capable stack; confirming exposure requires determining whether the deployed components and versions fall within the applicable advisory scope and whether the affected server behavior is present. The signals described in the article do not establish those facts on their own.

  • Presence: A framework clue or RSC-related asset suggests technology in use, not a specific vulnerable release.
  • Version: A browser-visible fingerprint does not necessarily reveal the exact server-side package version.
  • Exposure: A confirmed package version still needs to be interpreted in the context of React’s advisory and the application’s framework and deployment.
  • Safety: An active request can have effects beyond passive observation; the project write-up does not independently demonstrate otherwise.

How to act on React’s advisories now

React published additional RSC security guidance after the initial React2Shell fix. Its December 11, 2025 follow-up, updated January 26, 2026, documents further vulnerabilities and subsequent fixes. As a result, installing one of the initial December 3 package versions should not be treated as blanket evidence that a deployment satisfies current RSC remediation guidance. Read the later React advisory on denial of service and source-code exposure alongside the original advisory.

  1. Identify the framework and release line. Establish which framework, bundler, plugin, and RSC packages the application actually uses. Do not infer a framework upgrade version directly from a React package version.
  2. Follow the framework-specific instructions. Use the official React advisory’s instructions for the affected framework, including its Next.js release-line guidance where applicable.
  3. Check current guidance before acting. React’s advisories and supported release lines may change; consult their latest update instructions rather than relying on the initial package fixes listed above.
  4. Verify the resulting deployment. Confirm the corrected dependencies and framework releases are deployed through the organization’s normal build and release process. A reconnaissance fingerprint is not a substitute for this verification.

The package-level initial fixes and the later React guidance serve different purposes: the former record the first remediation for CVE-2025-55182, while the later advisories expand the security picture for RSC. The GitHub-reviewed GHSA-fv66-9v8q-g76r advisory provides another record of the original issue and its affected package versions.
