ChronicleKV is a local key-value database Lakshmi Venkatesan built with Python’s standard library after a 2026 hackathon required that “your dependency manifest must be empty.” Its core is an append-only write-ahead log (WAL): writes are recorded as checksummed records, then replayed on startup. That design made crash recovery—and the trade-off between acknowledging a write quickly and syncing it to storage—the project’s central engineering problem.

Venkatesan published the project account on September 5, 2026. The implementation details and test results below are author- and project-reported; the code and crash demonstrations have not been independently reproduced here. Read the project account or view the ChronicleKV repository.

Why build a database instead of installing one?

The Zero Dependency 2026 hackathon rule forced Venkatesan to reconsider which parts of a database depended on outside packages and which could be assembled from Python’s standard library. ChronicleKV is the result: an embedded, local key-value store with no third-party runtime dependencies, according to its repository.

The dependency constraint changed the tools, not the underlying storage problem. Venkatesan says the project replaced click or typer with argparse, filelock with POSIX fcntl.flock, orjson with Python’s json, pytest with unittest, and diskcache with a dictionary index over WAL offsets. The implementation still needed to decide how to record writes, detect damage, recover state, and tell callers when a write was durable.

How does ChronicleKV recover after a crash?

Append records rather than overwrite data

Instead of updating a data file in place, ChronicleKV appends operations to a write-ahead log. According to Venkatesan’s account, each binary record has a 30-byte fixed header containing magic bytes, a version, operation, sequence number, timestamp, and key and value lengths. The key and value bytes follow, then a 4-byte CRC32 checksum. That makes 34 bytes of fixed overhead per record before its key and value, based on the reported header and checksum sizes.

The checksum gives recovery code a way to detect a record that is incomplete or corrupted. On startup, ChronicleKV reads and replays valid records in sequence. If it encounters a checksum mismatch, it truncates the log from that point; the repository describes the behavior as replaying valid records and discarding an incomplete tail. Venkatesan summarized the goal as: “Just ‘recovery stopped at the last good write.’”

What append-only storage makes possible

Keeping operations in sequence also gives the program more than a route back to the latest state. The author says the sequence enabled point-in-time reads, history, diffs, and timeline features. The repository also lists prefix and range scans, compaction, integrity verification, and a TinyDB compatibility layer. Those features are useful for a small local store, but they do not turn it into a general-purpose relational or distributed database.

What does fsync buy you?

A successful write call does not necessarily mean the data has reached durable storage. ChronicleKV offers three modes that change when a write is acknowledged and how much recently written data may be lost if the process or machine stops abruptly. The descriptions below reflect the project’s documentation; actual persistence behavior also depends on the operating system, filesystem, storage device, and failure involved.

Mode When the caller gets an acknowledgement Trade-off described by ChronicleKV
Sync After each write is fsynced. Prioritizes durability before acknowledgement, at the cost of waiting for a sync on each write.
Async Writes may be acknowledged while buffered, before they are flushed. Can improve responsiveness, but unflushed writes can be lost after abrupt termination. The repository documents flush triggers of 100 records or 50 milliseconds; these are implementation settings, not universal guidance.
Batch When the caller explicitly flushes. Lets the caller decide when to pay the flush cost; writes since the preceding flush are exposed to loss if termination occurs first.

In short, fsync is the project’s stronger acknowledgement boundary: sync mode waits for it before reporting success. It cannot guarantee survival of every conceivable hardware or operating-system failure, but it narrows the gap between “the application accepted this write” and “the application requested that it be committed to storage.” Async and batch modes move that boundary later.

What did the crash demonstrations show?

Venkatesan reported zero lost writes in every sync-mode run attempted, and an average of 37–50 lost writes when killing a process mid-flight in async mode, depending on buffer state. The repository reports a more specific set of project runs: 15 of 15 sync comparisons showed zero lost writes, while all 15 async runs showed losses, averaging 37.4 lost writes per mid-flight crash. These are project demonstrations, not independent benchmarks or a reliability rate for other systems.

The repository cautions that the kill-based crash demonstration behaves differently across platforms: an operating system may expose an interrupted write differently, so the mechanism cannot establish identical results on every system. The numbers also do not establish outcomes for power loss, storage-controller failures, every filesystem, or other hardware. They illustrate the configured modes in the project’s reported runs, not a guarantee that sync mode can never lose data.

Venkatesan reports that the WAL and recovery logic in wal.py is approximately 187 lines, the storage engine approximately 413 lines, and the CLI approximately 261 lines. The author also reported 51 passing tests at publication. The build took about 18 hours during the 72-hour event window. These are project-reported figures, not an independent code audit or measure of how much work a production-ready database requires.

The author’s takeaway is that removing dependencies can clarify what they were doing: “Don’t think of ‘zero dependency’ as a restriction you’re working around — it’s forcing you to actually understand what the dependency was for.” That is an account of this build, not a claim that reimplementing a library is always preferable to using one.

How does ChronicleKV compare with TinyDB?

The author frames ChronicleKV as an option for small, local, crash-sensitive document-storage workloads where history and recovery matter. The repository explicitly does not describe it as a complete drop-in replacement for TinyDB. Their stated differences are about workload and scope, rather than a universal ranking.

Consideration ChronicleKV, as documented by its project TinyDB comparison in the project materials
Durability Offers per-write fsync, buffered async, and caller-triggered batch flush behavior. The project comparison emphasizes ChronicleKV’s configurable WAL durability. Actual behavior depends on each implementation and the storage stack.
Read-heavy work Its stated strengths are crash safety, history, and compaction. The repository says TinyDB may be faster for read-heavy cases because of in-memory caching; no independent benchmark is provided.
Queries and scale No query optimizer; scans may be linear or bisect-based. Choose based on the query patterns and data size you need; the project does not establish a universal performance winner.
History and maintenance Includes point-in-time reads, diffs, timelines, integrity verification, and compaction. These are presented as ChronicleKV features rather than a claim about every TinyDB configuration.
Concurrency and deployment Local, single-writer, multi-reader design; no network protocol or replication. ChronicleKV is not intended as a distributed database or multi-writer service.

What are the important limitations?

  • One writer per database file: The README describes a single-writer design. On POSIX, it uses fcntl.flock; the project says this implementation lacks equivalent cross-process locking enforcement on Windows.
  • Local storage only: There is no network protocol, built-in replication, or built-in backup. A local database file should not be mistaken for a backup strategy.
  • Limited query machinery: There is no query optimizer, and scans may require linear or bisect-based work.
  • Partial compatibility: The TinyDB compatibility layer does not promise coverage of every TinyDB feature.
  • Platform- and failure-dependent demonstrations: The repository notes that its kill-based crash demo may expose interrupted writes differently depending on the operating system.

Those boundaries make ChronicleKV a project to evaluate for a narrow embedded-storage need, not a substitute for a server database where concurrent writers, replication, networking, or managed backups are requirements.
