If you already know Python and SQL, you can start learning ABAP directly; you do not need to study another general-purpose language first. SAP’s beginner course explicitly accepts elementary knowledge of Python or another modern language as a prerequisite. Your effort is better spent on ABAP’s syntax and tooling, internal tables, SAP business objects, and the language version used by your target system.

What your Python and SQL experience gives you

Python experience carries over in useful ways: variables, control flow, functions and method decomposition, classes, and debugging habits are familiar concepts. SQL knowledge also helps you reason about relational data and queries. SAP’s Learning Basic ABAP Programming lists “Elementary knowledge of a modern programming language such as Java, JavaScript, C# or Python” as a prerequisite, so you can begin at beginner ABAP material rather than taking another introductory programming course.

That head start does not eliminate the SAP-specific learning curve. You still need to learn ABAP syntax and typing, structures and internal tables, repository objects and packages, and the development workflow in ABAP Development Tools (ADT). SQL is only one piece of the work: SAP’s beginner curriculum also covers business objects, EML, and RAP.

Choose the ABAP environment for your target system

Before installing tools or following exercises, decide where you expect your ABAP code to run. The target deployment affects the ADT project type, available language version, and APIs you can use. SAP distinguishes the project options this way in its development-environment material:

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
  • On-premise or SAP S/4HANA Private Cloud: Use an ABAP Project to connect to the ABAP system.
  • SAP BTP ABAP environment or SAP S/4HANA Public Cloud: Use an ABAP Cloud Project.

Both paths use Eclipse with ABAP Development Tools, but you need access to an appropriate development or training system to do meaningful hands-on exercises. SAP’s course material uses an ABAP environment in SAP BTP and describes the project and service-key setup for its cloud exercises. Check SAP’s current account, system-provisioning, and trial information before trying to reproduce those steps; availability and requirements can change.

Match your language version to your goal

ABAP is not a single unrestricted target. SAP describes Standard ABAP as unrestricted, while ABAP for Cloud Development and ABAP for Key Users are restricted language versions. ABAP for Cloud Development requires the use of released SAP APIs and extension points. SAP says ABAP Cloud is mandatory on SAP BTP and in S/4HANA Cloud Public Edition; in private edition and on-premise it is not mandatory, but is strongly recommended. If you are learning for a specific role, ask which deployment and language version that role uses before choosing projects or tutorials.

Follow a practical learning sequence

SAP’s beginner curriculum is a good structure for a Python- and SQL-literate learner. Work through the concepts in order, and write small programs as you go rather than treating the course as passive reading.

  1. Start with SAP’s beginner ABAP course. Learning Basic ABAP Programming covers the ABAP environment, basic techniques, object-oriented programs, ABAP SQL, structured data, complex internal tables, business objects, and RAP. SAP Learning listed the course as 17 hr 29 min with eight units when retrieved in 2026; that is page metadata, not a prediction of how long you will need to study.
  2. Set up Eclipse and ADT against the right system. Follow the setup that matches your deployment target and project type. Confirm that you can connect to the system and create or open the course exercises before moving on.
  3. Run a tiny program first. SAP’s first ABAP application lesson uses a class implementing IF_OO_ADT_CLASSRUN to print a Hello World example in the ADT console. Treat this as a milestone: it introduces the editor, activation and run workflow, and output without requiring you to design a full business application.
  4. Learn ABAP’s core language features. Study data types and variables, conditional logic, runtime errors, and debugging. Use the debugger deliberately: being comfortable debugging Python does not tell you how ABAP reports errors or how ADT presents the execution state.
  5. Move from database reads to ABAP data structures. Learn ABAP SQL, then practice representing and working with results using structures and internal tables. Familiar SQL concepts will help, but ABAP’s in-memory table types and language conventions are new material.
  6. Add object-oriented ABAP and SAP business patterns. Continue with classes and methods, then learn business objects and EML for working with business data. Do not assume that knowing how to write a SQL update is equivalent to understanding the SAP business-object approach.
  7. Study RAP after the building blocks. RAP is SAP’s model for developing SAP HANA-optimized OData services, including services for Fiori applications and Web APIs. It makes more sense after you understand the language, data access, and business-object concepts beneath it.

Build a small project that joins the concepts

Once you can write and run basic ABAP, use a small business-data scenario to connect the pieces. For example, build a simple service around a set of business records:

Use additional learning material selectively

The beginner course is the clearest starting point; SAP’s Acquiring Core ABAP Skills journey broadens the path toward modern ABAP development, RAP, and Clean Core. Course listings and durations can change. SAP Learning listed its separate beginner course on ABAP for BTP as 6 hr 28 min with six units when retrieved in 2026; that figure is course-page metadata, not a study-time guarantee.

If you prefer instructor-led study, SAP lists instructor-led and partner-delivered training, but providers and delivery arrangements vary by location. For self-study, books can be a supplement, not a substitute for practice in the target environment. Before buying any ABAP book, check its edition and coverage of the language version, RAP, and deployment model you need; current availability and relevance are not established by a catalog listing alone.
