A video capture board—more commonly called a video capture card or capture device—takes audio and video from an external source, such as a game console or camera, and makes that signal available to a computer for recording or streaming. It may connect externally over USB or install inside a desktop through PCIe.
What does a video capture board do?
The device receives a source’s audio/video output and passes it to a computer, where recording or streaming software can use the feed. For example, a console can send its HDMI output to a capture device, which delivers the signal to a computer for a live stream or recording. How does a capture board connect?
Despite the word “board,” a capture device is not necessarily an internal computer component. External models commonly connect to a computer over USB; internal models install in a desktop using a PCIe slot. The source connection must also match the device’s input. StarTech’s pre-purchase FAQ covers compatibility considerations, and Elgato’s setup guide illustrates a console-and-computer connection.
Capture versus passthrough
Capture and passthrough are separate signal paths. Capture sends the feed to the computer for recording or streaming. Passthrough sends the source signal onward to a connected display, such as a TV or monitor. In a typical console arrangement, HDMI runs from the console to the capture device, and a second HDMI connection carries the signal from the device to the display. The computer receives the capture feed over USB or through its internal PCIe card.

A model’s capture capability and passthrough capability may support different resolutions or frame rates. Compare both specifications if you plan to keep a display connected. See Elgato’s explanation of passthrough versus capture.
What to check before choosing one
- Source input: Confirm that the capture device accepts the output connection from your console, camera, or other source.
- Computer connection: For an external model, check that the computer has the required USB connection. For an internal model, confirm that the desktop has an available PCIe slot.
- Operating system, software, and drivers: Check the exact model’s support documentation for compatibility with your computer and for any required recording or streaming software and drivers.
- Resolution and frame rate: Verify that capture supports the signal you want the computer to record or stream. If you will use a display at the same time, check the passthrough resolution and frame rate separately.
- Protected content: Recording restrictions can depend on the device and signal. StarTech says its capture devices cannot record HDCP-protected content; consult the documentation for the specific model rather than assuming that statement applies to every brand or device.
- Cables: Check what is included and what you already own. Elgato’s described passthrough setup requires an additional HDMI cable.
When is it useful?
A capture board is useful when you want a computer to record or stream audio and video coming from another device. A USB model can suit a laptop or portable setup, while a PCIe card is an option for a compatible desktop. The right type depends on the source connection, computer ports or slots, operating system, desired capture mode, and whether you need passthrough to a separate display.
