TypeScript is a checker for JavaScript, not a separate runtime: it checks your code before execution, then its types are erased when JavaScript is emitted. To learn it well, start with JavaScript’s runtime behavior, use strict checks in new projects where practical, and learn unions and narrowing before advanced type tricks.
What TypeScript does—and what it does not do
The TypeScript Handbook describes its goal as “a static typechecker for JavaScript programs”—a tool that runs before your code runs and checks the program’s types. TypeScript code ultimately runs as JavaScript. Types do not validate data at runtime, and a type assertion only changes what the checker believes; it does not inspect or transform the value into the asserted type. Microsoft’s TypeScript Handbook explains this role.
That distinction matters when data comes from an API, a file, or another untyped boundary. A declared type is not proof that the incoming value has the shape you expect. Validate such data at runtime, and test the JavaScript behavior your application depends on.
Learn JavaScript alongside TypeScript
TypeScript builds on JavaScript syntax and preserves JavaScript runtime behavior. If you already understand JavaScript, that knowledge transfers directly. If TypeScript is your first programming language, learn JavaScript fundamentals alongside it rather than expecting TypeScript to replace them. The official beginner guide addresses the question, “Should I learn JavaScript or TypeScript?”

Make sure you can work with values, functions, objects, arrays, modules, and the way JavaScript behaves at runtime. Those concepts are the foundation for understanding what TypeScript can check—and what still needs to be handled by JavaScript code.
A practical order for learning TypeScript
- Get comfortable with JavaScript fundamentals. Learn the values and runtime behavior your TypeScript programs will use.
- Start with inference and everyday annotations. TypeScript can infer many types from values. Add annotations where they clarify intent, function contracts, or public boundaries instead of mechanically annotating every expression.
- Learn object shapes, unions, and narrowing. A union describes more than one possible value. A control-flow check—such as testing a property or checking a value’s type—can narrow that set so the code can safely use the relevant member.
- Turn on strict checking in new work where practical. Learn to resolve errors, especially around implicit types and nullable values, rather than silencing them reflexively.
- Study generics after concrete function types make sense. A generic is useful when a relationship between inputs and outputs should be preserved across different values or types. It is not necessary to begin with abstract type puzzles.
- Choose module settings for the actual project. First identify whether the code runs in Node, a browser, a bundler, or more than one environment; then follow the matching module guidance.
- Use diagnostics as feedback, not as a reason to assert blindly. Editor and compiler messages can expose mismatches. An assertion can suppress a mismatch without proving the value is valid.
This is a useful learning sequence, not a curriculum prescribed verbatim by Microsoft. The Handbook is a practical guide for everyday programming, not a complete language specification or a guide to every integration. Read its scope and introduction as you work through the fundamentals.

Why strict checks are a strong starting point
For a new codebase, the Handbook recommends enabling strict checks when possible. In a tsconfig.json, that usually means starting with "strict": true. It enables a group of checks; individual options can still be tuned when the project requires it. Two especially useful concepts are:
noImplicitAnyreports places where TypeScript would otherwise inferanyimplicitly.strictNullChecksmakesnullandundefinedexplicit possibilities that your code must account for.
These checks make the types more informative: an unhandled nullable value or an implicit escape from checking is less likely to pass unnoticed. They do not guarantee bug-free runtime behavior, so retain runtime validation and testing.

Strictness need not be an all-at-once migration. If you are bringing checks to existing JavaScript, introduce them incrementally. The official basics guidance covers core type behavior, while the everyday types guide is useful for common annotations and inference.
Use any deliberately; prefer unknown at uncertain boundaries
any turns off checking for that value. Operations performed on it can continue unchecked, so an expedient fix in one place may weaken checking in later expressions. Treat it as an explicit escape hatch, not the default answer to a compiler error.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
When a value’s type is not yet known—especially untrusted input—unknown is usually a safer starting point. It prevents you from using the value as if it had a particular shape until you check it and narrow it. The Handbook’s discussion of any explains why it removes useful guarantees.
Do not copy a universal tsconfig
Module behavior depends on how a project is built and where its code runs. Node applications, browser applications, and bundler-based projects can require different module settings. A project with server, DOM, worker, or test code may also need distinct configurations for those environments.

Identify the runtime and build tool before choosing module options. The TypeScript module guide organizes its guidance around application or library use and the surrounding runtime or bundler. Check it against the TypeScript version installed in your project; a configuration copied from a different project may not fit your build.
Choose a learning resource that fits your level
The free TypeScript Handbook is the natural first reference for the fundamentals and everyday use. Its practical scope is useful, but it is not the full language specification and does not cover every tool integration.
If you have learned the basics and want a book-length follow-on, O’Reilly lists Effective TypeScript, 2nd Edition by Dan Vanderkam (April 2024; ISBN 9781098155056) as beginner-to-intermediate and updated for TypeScript 5. See the publisher’s catalog entry. The author’s announcement names Amazon and Kindle among its purchase channels, as well as other channels: Dan Vanderkam’s announcement. It is optional further reading, not a prerequisite or replacement for the Handbook.
