An “Active Directory server” usually means a Windows Server computer acting as a domain controller. It runs Active Directory Domain Services (AD DS), which stores a shared directory of network users, computers, and other objects and helps authenticate users and manage access.
What does “Active Directory server” mean?
The phrase is common shorthand, not the clearest formal name. AD DS is the directory service; a domain controller (DC) is the server that runs it. Microsoft’s [overview of Active Directory Domain Services] describes a directory as a hierarchical structure that stores information about network objects.
The directory can contain objects such as user accounts, computers, groups, printers, servers, and shared resources. AD DS makes that information available to clients and administrators, and supports authentication, access control, searches, and locating objects.
What does a domain controller do?
A domain controller provides domain services to computers and users in its domain. A domain-joined computer can use AD DS when a user signs in and when access to network resources is evaluated. Administrators use the directory to manage accounts and other objects, and can apply policy to users and computers.

Organizations can run more than one domain controller. Microsoft says domain controllers in a domain each contain a complete copy of that domain’s directory information, and changes are replicated among them. This is how multiple controllers can serve the same domain while keeping directory data synchronized.
How do computers find an Active Directory server?
DNS is central to locating domain controllers. A client uses DNS to discover a controller for its domain, and domain controllers use DNS to find one another. If a domain-joined computer cannot locate a suitable controller, domain authentication and other directory-dependent tasks may fail. How are forests, domains, and OUs related?
AD DS has a logical hierarchy: a forest contains one or more domains, and domains can contain organizational units (OUs). OUs help organize directory objects and support administration. The hierarchy describes how directory information is structured; it does not dictate the number of physical servers or where they must be placed. How is AD DS different from other Microsoft directory services?

Use AD DS for the directory service and domain controller for the Windows Server computer that runs it. “Active Directory server” is understandable shorthand for that computer, but it should not be confused with a general file server, AD LDS, or Microsoft Entra ID.
