Track each ActiveAdmin 4 theme as a versioned set of CSS and view-partial changes, then verify it against a pinned Rails fixture app in CI. ActiveAdmin’s v4 upgrade guide describes the release line as beta, based on Tailwind CSS v4, and supports customization through CSS and partials. Because copied templates can change between releases, a useful catalog records exactly what was tested and which files a theme overrides.
What to record for each ActiveAdmin theme
ActiveAdmin is a Ruby on Rails administration framework whose project goals include extensive interface customization. Its v4 guide documents both CSS and partial customization. A Markdown record is a practical way to keep a theme’s source, compatibility evidence, and verification instructions together; it is a curation recommendation, not an official ActiveAdmin format.
Use one Markdown file per theme and capture:
- Identity: theme name, source location, license, and maintainer.
- Tested versions: exact ActiveAdmin version or range, Rails version, Ruby version, and Tailwind version actually checked. Identify the specific release rather than writing only “ActiveAdmin 4.”
- Overrides: CSS entry point, plugins or configuration, and any generated ActiveAdmin partials. Clearly flag copied private templates.
- Verified behavior: dark mode, right-to-left layout, responsive behavior, or other appearance claims only when checked.
- Build and installation: the project’s actual setup and commands, including relevant dependency versions.
- Verification record: date, CI job reference, and known limitations.
This makes compatibility an evidence-backed claim: the record says what was tested, rather than implying that a theme works with every v4 prerelease or configuration.
Check the ActiveAdmin version before curating
The ActiveAdmin releases page lists v4.0.0.beta22 as a prerelease and v3.5.1 as the latest stable release shown in the retrieved listing. The beta22 entry is dated March 7 in that listing, which does not provide a year. Treat these as the page’s listed state, not a guarantee of current release status; record the exact release tested and check the project’s release page when updating your catalog.

The ActiveAdmin v4 upgrading guide says that v4 uses Tailwind CSS v4 and describes mobile, dark-mode, and RTL support. Those are documented capabilities of the framework; they do not by themselves establish that a particular third-party theme has been checked in each mode. Record theme-level behavior only after validating it.
Customize CSS and partials with upgrade risk in view
ActiveAdmin’s guide describes the default theme as customizable through CSS and partials. The guide’s command rails g active_admin:views copies view partials for customization. The documentation warns, “Note that the templates can and will change across releases.” It also identifies some copied partials as private and used at the adopter’s risk.

Prefer documented, public customization surfaces where possible. If a theme copies a private partial, name the file in its Markdown record and treat it as an override that needs review when ActiveAdmin changes version. The fact that a copied partial works against one tested release does not establish compatibility with later releases.
Pin the build setup rather than copying a timeless recipe
The v4 guide’s setup assumes cssbundling-rails and importmap-rails are installed and configured. It demonstrates pinning ActiveAdmin and its npm package to 4.0.0.beta22, generating assets, and building the stylesheet with @tailwindcss/cli. These are version-specific examples from the guide, not universal commands for every Rails app or later ActiveAdmin release.

For each curated theme, preserve the build instructions that were actually run in its fixture project, along with locked Ruby and JavaScript dependencies. Where you rely on the guide’s setup, consult the guide itself for the applicable commands and prerequisites instead of assuming that a command copied from an older record remains valid.
Verify the theme in CI
ActiveAdmin’s official pages do not prescribe a theme catalog schema or CI workflow. The following checks are a practical project recommendation for detecting integration failures; they do not establish upstream support or guarantee visual correctness.

- Pin the fixture: set the exact ActiveAdmin, Rails, Ruby, Tailwind, and JavaScript dependency versions represented by the theme’s compatibility claim.
- Install locked dependencies: install the Ruby and JavaScript dependencies from the fixture project’s lockfiles so the build is repeatable.
- Prepare intended assets: generate or check in only the assets the project expects, following the project’s documented setup.
- Build the stylesheet: run the same CSS build command used by the fixture and fail the job if compilation fails.
- Boot a minimal Rails app: start the app with ActiveAdmin configured so tests exercise the integration, not just a standalone CSS file.
- Request representative pages: exercise login, index, form, and show pages to catch missing styles or partial errors across common screens.
- Assert stylesheet and selectors: check that the expected stylesheet loads and that representative theme selectors or design tokens are present.
- Add visual or accessibility checks where needed: browser screenshots and accessibility checks can add coverage, but should remain distinct from claims about what ActiveAdmin officially supports.
Compare themes on adoption risks
A catalog is more useful when it compares the practical costs and evidence behind each option, not just its colors. Use consistent columns, and write “not stated” with the source when a value has not been established.
