AWS says it has spent eight years progressively rewriting performance-critical code in Amazon S3’s request path in Rust. The announcement describes a behind-the-scenes engineering effort, not a new setting customers must enable. AWS did not publish a benchmark or quantify how much faster the rewrite makes S3, so there is no substantiated percentage or latency gain to report.

What changed in Amazon S3

In a March 13, 2026 anniversary article, AWS said it had progressively rewritten performance-critical parts of the S3 request path in Rust over the preceding eight years. That describes ongoing modernization of server-side software—not a new storage device, a customer-side upgrade, or a discrete feature with a stated rollout date. AWS did not identify which operations benefited or provide benchmark methods or before-and-after results in that article. AWS News Blog: Twenty years of Amazon S3 and building what’s next.

How large is the performance boost?

The announcement does not quantify the effect. It gives no percentage increase, latency reduction, or throughput multiplier, and does not establish that every workload or customer sees the same result. Treat “performance boost” as a description of the engineering effort, not as a measurable customer promise.

Do customers need to change anything?

No customer-side setting or application change is identified as necessary to receive the server-side rewrite. If an S3 workload is slow, diagnose its actual bottleneck rather than assuming the service implementation alone determines end-to-end performance. Client network capacity, CPU and memory, request concurrency, object size, geography, and workload patterns can all affect observed results.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

What request rates does AWS document?

AWS’s S3 performance design guidance says customers can achieve at least the following request rates per partitioned prefix. These are service guidance figures, not a guarantee for an individual workload.

Request type AWS guidance per partitioned prefix
PUT, COPY, POST, or DELETE At least 3,500 requests per second
GET or HEAD At least 5,500 requests per second

AWS explains that distributing requests across prefixes can support higher aggregate rates; its example uses 10 prefixes for 55,000 GET requests per second. Scaling to a higher request rate happens gradually, and clients may receive 503 Slow Down responses during that process. Realized performance depends on workload characteristics, usage patterns, and system configuration. See AWS’s S3 performance design patterns.

How to improve S3 performance in practice

Start by measuring the workload and identifying whether the constraint is request rate, transfer of large objects, client resources, or geographic distance. AWS’s performance guidelines recommend these approaches:

  • Measure the client and network: Check network throughput, CPU, and memory while the workload runs. A saturated client or network can limit results even when S3 is not the bottleneck.
  • Use concurrency where appropriate: Send concurrent requests over separate connections when the application and workload benefit from parallelism.
  • Consider byte-range requests for large objects: Fetching different ranges concurrently can help when retrieving large objects, but suitability depends on the application and object access pattern.
  • Watch for 503 Slow Down responses: Monitor responses as request rates increase; AWS says scaling is gradual. Set timeouts and retries to match the workload’s latency tolerance.
  • Review placement and transfer distance: Same-Region compute and storage can reduce the distance between application and data. AWS also recommends considering Transfer Acceleration for long-distance data movement.
  • Use current AWS SDK behavior: AWS points to SDK retry features and Transfer Manager capabilities; check the documentation for the SDK and version your application uses.

Choose an optimization based on the bottleneck

Observed constraint Approach to assess What to measure
Many requests or rising 503 responses Review request distribution, concurrency, and retry and timeout configuration. Request mix, 503 frequency, latency, and achieved request rate.
Slow retrieval of large objects Test concurrent byte-range reads where the application can use them. Object size, transfer time, client CPU, and network throughput.
Application and bucket are geographically distant Assess same-Region placement where feasible, or test Transfer Acceleration for long-distance transfers. End-to-end latency and throughput from the application’s actual locations.
Unclear or inconsistent results Profile client resources and network conditions; compare results across representative workload patterns. CPU, memory, network capacity, request pattern, and observed latency.

Measure before adopting an additional AWS feature, and account for operational and cost implications. AWS notes that some monitoring metrics may incur charges; consult current AWS documentation for the metric and configuration you plan to use.
