Spring Boot brings together application startup, dependency setup, conditional configuration, and production management so Java developers can build on the Spring Framework without wiring every common component by hand. Its central idea is a set of useful defaults—not a black box: dependencies influence which defaults apply, Spring manages application objects as beans, and your configuration can change the behavior for each run.

What are the key concepts in Spring Boot?

Spring Boot is built around the Spring Framework. It streamlines how a Spring application is started and configured by combining conventions, dependency management, conditional auto-configuration, and operational features. These concepts fit together in the order an application is assembled and run:

  1. Startup: SpringApplication launches the application and creates its Spring application context.
  2. Dependencies: starters make it easier to add a set of related libraries.
  3. Defaults: auto-configuration evaluates the classpath and other conditions to configure common components.
  4. Application code: Spring discovers and manages beans, then supplies their dependencies.
  5. Runtime behavior: external properties and profiles adapt the application to a particular environment.
  6. Operations: Actuator and management endpoints support monitoring and administration when appropriately configured.

The details can differ between Spring Boot release lines. The official documentation overview displayed Spring Boot 4.1.1 as stable on October 4, 2026; consult the reference documentation for the release your project actually uses.

How does Spring Boot start an application?

A standard Spring Boot application has a Java main() method that calls SpringApplication.run. The main class commonly carries @SpringBootApplication, which brings together application configuration, component scanning, and the auto-configuration entry point.

@SpringBootApplication
public class MyApplication {
    public static void main(String[] args) {
        SpringApplication.run(MyApplication.class, args);
    }
}

Place the main class in a root package above the application’s other packages. Its package provides the natural starting point for discovering application components and related classes. Avoid the Java default package, which can lead to excessively broad scanning. Spring Boot does not require one particular code layout, but a sensible package root helps make discovery predictable. See the official Structuring Your Code guidance.

What do Spring Boot starters do?

A starter is a dependency descriptor for a capability, not an application generator. It groups commonly used Spring and related dependencies, while Spring Boot’s dependency management helps keep transitive library versions aligned. For example, spring-boot-starter-data-jpa is a starting point for using Spring with JPA. It does not remove the need to understand JPA, choose and configure a database, or design the application’s data layer.

There are starters and dependency options for web applications, data access, security, testing, messaging, and other areas. Names and available options can change, so use the build documentation for the project’s release rather than treating any starter list as permanent. The official Build Systems reference covers both Maven and Gradle as well as starter dependencies. In practice, teams often choose the build tool their project already supports and configure its Spring Boot plugin and dependency management accordingly.

How does auto-configuration work—and how do you change it?

Auto-configuration uses conditions, including what is available on the classpath, to set up common Spring components. Adding a dependency can therefore make a particular configuration relevant. For example, the Spring Boot reference describes an HSQLDB dependency with no manually configured database connection beans as a case where Boot can configure an in-memory database.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Auto-configuration is enabled through @EnableAutoConfiguration, which is included by @SpringBootApplication. These configurations are designed to back away when the application supplies its own configuration for the same concern—for example, a project-defined DataSource. This means you can start with defaults and customize the parts your application needs, rather than choosing between accepting everything and disabling auto-configuration altogether.

If a default is surprising, use the documented debug switch to inspect the auto-configuration conditions report. It can show which conditions matched and help explain why a configuration was applied or did not apply. Consult the release-specific Auto-configuration reference for the exact diagnostic guidance.

What are Spring beans, and how does dependency injection fit in?

A Spring bean is an object created and managed in the application context. Component scanning can register application classes marked as components; common stereotypes include @Service, @Repository, and @Controller. The scan scope follows the package layout rooted at the main application class, so place components beneath that root unless you intentionally configure a different scan scope.

When one bean needs another, Spring can supply the dependency. Constructor injection is the recommended default: it makes required collaborators visible in the class constructor and lets fields be declared final.

How do configuration properties and profiles change behavior?

Spring Boot can read configuration from multiple property sources. Their precedence determines which value wins when the same setting appears more than once. As a practical example, an environment variable or command-line value can override a value in an application configuration file according to the ordering documented for the release. This lets a deployment change a setting without requiring a separate code change. See Externalized Configuration for the source ordering and supported formats.

Profiles let an application select configuration and components for a particular environment or feature grouping. For instance, a team might activate a dev profile for local settings and a production profile for deployment-specific settings. The spring.profiles.active property selects active profiles. If none is active, Spring Boot uses the default profile unless the application configures that behavior otherwise.

Profile-specific configuration files, profile inclusion, and profile groups provide additional ways to organize settings. Some profile activation properties have placement restrictions and cannot simply be put in any profile-specific document; follow the rules in the release’s Profiles reference. Profiles select configuration and components; they are not a security boundary or a substitute for secret management and authorization.

What does Spring Boot provide for production monitoring?

Spring Boot supports production monitoring and management through Actuator and management endpoints. These capabilities are separate from an application’s business endpoints: they can provide operational information such as health and metrics, depending on the features and configuration in use. The Actuator starter is the documented dependency option for adding production-oriented monitoring and management features.

Do not assume every management endpoint is automatically exposed or safe to make public. Decide which endpoints the deployment needs, configure their availability and exposure, and protect them appropriately. The official Endpoints documentation explains endpoint concepts and configuration.

How the concepts connect

When a Spring Boot application starts, SpringApplication.run builds the application context. Starters contribute libraries to the classpath; conditional auto-configuration uses that context to offer relevant defaults. Component scanning finds application beans, and dependency injection connects them. Property sources and profiles influence the configuration used for that run, while Actuator can add operational features for a deployment.

When something behaves unexpectedly, trace that chain: check the dependencies, inspect the conditions report, confirm the package scan scope, and verify the effective properties and active profiles. For exact options and behavior, use documentation matching the project’s Spring Boot release.
