A cloud server is a virtual server hosted on computing infrastructure operated by a cloud provider. You can use it to run an operating system, applications, and other workloads, while the provider operates the underlying physical machines and data-center infrastructure.
How does a cloud server work?
A cloud provider uses virtualization to divide the resources of physical computers among multiple virtual servers. Each cloud server runs in its own software environment, with an allocated share of computing resources. Depending on the service, a customer can choose settings such as CPU, memory, storage, networking, operating system, and preinstalled software.
After choosing a configuration, a customer can create and manage an instance using the provider’s web console, command line, or API. The server is accessed over a network; the customer manages the virtual environment and workloads, while the provider maintains the physical infrastructure. The details and available controls vary by provider and service. AWS explains cloud server virtualization and provisioning.
What is the difference between a cloud server and cloud computing?
Cloud computing is the broader model for providing computing resources over a network. NIST defines it as “a model for enabling ubiquitous, convenient, on-demand network access to a shared pool of configurable computing resources,” including networks, servers, storage, applications, and services. NIST published its definition in Special Publication 800-145 in 2011.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
A cloud server is one kind of resource within that model. Infrastructure as a service (IaaS) commonly provides virtual machines or servers alongside resources such as storage and networking. Cloud providers may also offer related services—including managed databases, object storage, load balancing, and serverless computing—that are not themselves cloud server instances. Microsoft Azure describes cloud computing and IaaS.
Cloud server vs. physical server
A physical server is a computer whose hardware an organization typically owns and maintains on its own premises. With a cloud server, the provider operates the underlying hardware, and the customer uses a virtual instance. This changes how capacity is obtained and managed, but does not guarantee a particular performance, security, reliability, or cost outcome.

| Consideration | Cloud server | On-premises physical server |
|---|---|---|
| Hardware | The provider operates the physical infrastructure. | The organization typically owns and maintains the equipment. |
| Provisioning | Instances can be created through a provider console, command line, or API. | Adding capacity generally involves installing or changing hardware. |
| Scaling | Depending on the service, capacity may be adjusted or additional instances added. | Increasing physical capacity may require additional equipment. |
| Cost model | Often billed according to usage; exact charges depend on configuration and use. | Commonly involves upfront hardware costs and ongoing operations. |
These are general differences in operating model, not a claim that cloud is always less expensive. The right cost comparison depends on workload, configuration, usage, and the costs of operating physical equipment. AWS outlines these broad differences, while its cloud-computing overview describes usage-based billing.

It may be possible to resize an instance or add instances as demand changes, but available options depend on the provider and service. A cloud server is not automatically a managed database or a serverless service; those are separate offerings with different management models. AWS lists examples of cloud server workloads.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Are cloud servers unlimited or interchangeable?
No. “Cloud” refers to provider-operated resources accessed over a network, not literally limitless capacity. Providers offer different configurations, controls, and pricing, and terms such as cloud server, virtual server, cloud instance, and virtual machine can overlap without meaning that every service works identically. Check the specific service’s capabilities and charges when moving from a general definition to a deployment decision. Google Cloud explains virtual servers.
