Frontier Communications detected unauthorized access to parts of its IT environment on April 14, 2024, and said shutting down certain systems to contain the incident caused an operational disruption. The company had about 3.0 million broadband subscribers at the time, but its public filings do not say how many customers lost internet service. Separately, a Maine breach notice lists 751,895 people whose personal information was affected; that is a data-exposure count, not an outage count.
What happened at Frontier Communications?
Frontier’s SEC disclosure says it detected unauthorized access to parts of its information technology environment on April 14, 2024. A Maine Attorney General notice identifies April 13 as the breach date and April 14 as the discovery date. Frontier said it activated incident-response protocols and shut down certain systems as a containment measure. It described the resulting operational disruption as potentially material in its initial filing and said its investigation indicated the intruder was likely a cybercrime group that had accessed personally identifiable information. In its first-quarter 2024 report, Frontier said it believed the incident was contained and that core IT and normal business operations had been restored. How many Frontier customers lost broadband service?
The public records cited here do not establish a verified number of broadband customers who lost service or how long any interruption lasted. Frontier reported approximately 3.0 million broadband subscribers across 25 states as of March 31, 2024, but that figure describes its subscriber base—not the number affected by an outage. How many people were affected by the data breach?
The Maine Attorney General’s 2024 breach notice lists 751,895 people affected overall, including 139 Maine residents. The notice says names or other personal identifiers were involved in combination with Social Security numbers. This reported population is separate from Frontier’s broadband subscriber base and does not indicate how many people experienced a service interruption. Was your Social Security number exposed?
The Maine notice confirms that the incident involved names or personal identifiers paired with Social Security numbers, but the public notice does not identify every affected individual. If you received a notification from Frontier, use that letter to determine whether your information was included and follow its instructions. Frontier’s notice said it did not believe personal financial information was affected.

What should affected customers do?
- Check for Frontier’s notification. The incident letter was directed to affected individuals and described a one-year offer of complimentary credit monitoring and identity theft resolution through Kroll. The letter records the offer at the time; it does not establish that enrollment is still open.
- Review account statements. Frontier’s letter advised recipients to remain vigilant and check statements for unfamiliar activity.
- Monitor credit reports. The company’s notification also advised affected individuals to monitor their credit reports for unexpected changes.
What Frontier later said about the impact
Frontier’s 2024 annual report said the incident did not materially affect its financial condition or results of operations. It also reiterated that system shutdowns used for containment caused an operational disruption.
