Alpine Linux’s February 3, 2025 appeal sought replacement infrastructure after Equinix Metal announced the sunset of its bare-metal hosting service. The project asked for hosting resources—not general technical support for Alpine users—and named mirror storage, CI runners, and a development server as the affected workloads. The appeal is historical; available information does not establish whether the request is still open in October 2026.
What Alpine Linux asked for
In its February 3, 2025 infrastructure appeal, the Alpine Linux Development Team said Equinix Metal had hosted three storage services for its T1 mirroring infrastructure, two CI runner servers (one for x86_64 and one for x86), and one development machine.
The project sought colocation near the Netherlands and high-performance bare-metal servers for T1 mirroring. For development and CI, it also said virtual machines with suitable storage, compute, and network capacity could be an alternative. The appeal did not provide a complete procurement specification, service-level agreement, or current architecture.
Resource needs by workload
| Workload | Appeal’s stated requirements | Resource type sought |
|---|---|---|
| T1 mirror storage | 5 TB of disk space for each of three storage services; approximately 800 TB of bandwidth per month used by the T1 mirrors. These are figures published by Alpine Linux in its 2025 appeal, not independently validated current capacity measurements. | High-performance bare-metal servers; colocation near the Netherlands was requested. |
| CI runners | At least 50 GB of disk space and 16 GB of RAM per runner server, according to the appeal. Alpine said more resources were preferable for large builds such as Chromium. | Compute servers; VMs were also described as an alternative for CI. |
| Development server | Specific disk, memory, and network figures were not stated in the appeal. | A development box; a VM was offered as a possible alternative. |
The mirror figures and CI minimums describe different workloads: the 5 TB and monthly bandwidth figures apply to mirroring, while 50 GB of disk and 16 GB of RAM are CI runner minimums.

- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
How an infrastructure provider can assess an offer
Alpine’s appeal invited organizations able to provide hosting resources or financial contributions to get in touch. A potential sponsor can make its offer easier to assess by specifying:
- Whether it can provide colocation, bare metal, or virtual machines, and which workload the offer can support.
- For colocation, the facility location—particularly its proximity to the Netherlands.
- Available storage, network capacity, and compute, compared with the relevant figures in the table.
- Whether the contribution is donated or sponsored, and how long the resources can be maintained.
These points help describe an offer against the appeal, but they are not a substitute for Alpine’s current requirements. The 2025 post directed infrastructure inquiries to infra@alpinelinux.org and financial contributions to Open Collective. Because the appeal is historical, confirm with Alpine that it still needs the proposed resources before treating either route as a current solicitation. The team’s wording was: “If you or your organization can assist with hosting resources or financial contributions, please don’t hesitate to reach out.”

This is separate from support for Alpine Linux users
The infrastructure appeal concerns hosting for Alpine Linux’s project operations. It is not an announcement of paid support for people running Alpine on their own servers. Alpine’s community page lists IRC, mailing lists, and the wiki as user and developer resources; it points quick support questions to #alpine-linux and development support to #alpine-devel.
For people looking to host their own web, mail, or other network services on Alpine, the hosting services wiki page is the relevant technical orientation. That is a different question from donating infrastructure to the Alpine project.

Project support context
Alpine’s release page says stable branches are made from edge each May and November. It describes the main repository as typically supported for two years and community repository support as continuing until the next stable release. As displayed on that page when checked for this article, v3.24 support ran through 2028-06-01 and v3.23 through 2027-11-01; consult the live schedule for current dates.
The release schedule describes software support periods, not the status of the hosting appeal. The available information does not confirm whether Alpine secured replacement infrastructure, whether the listed needs remain outstanding, or whether it offers commercial support terms or has a verified hosting-vendor partnership.
