In database contexts, the term overlaps with data definition language, the more familiar expansion of DDL in many SQL explanations. The exact meaning depends on the system: other formats also use DDL in their names without being the same database language.
What does data description language mean?
A data description language (DDL) describes how data is structured; it is not the data itself. In a database, that description can cover data elements or attributes, the logical database structure, relationships among records, and logical ways to access them.
The Office québécois de la langue française defines the French equivalent as a language that allows the structure of data in a database to be described. Its terminology record lists “data description language,” “data definition language,” and “DDL” as English terms. This supports treating the two phrases as overlapping in database usage, while checking the meaning in the specific system being discussed.
What does DDL describe in a database?
A U.S. government report’s working definition describes DDL as a standalone language for defining data-element attributes, logical database structure, relationships among records, and logical access methods. These are descriptions of the database’s logical organization rather than a map of where its data sits on physical storage.

The distinction also appears in historical CODASYL material: schema DDL is device-independent. A schema describes the whole database, while a subschema describes the portion relevant to a particular program. The government report distinguishes DDL from DMCL, a separate language used to map data onto physical storage media and describe its physical location and organization.
Is data description language the same as data definition language?
In database terminology, the phrases overlap, and both may be abbreviated DDL. In many introductory SQL contexts, however, DDL is expanded as data definition language. OpenStax uses that term for language that creates and modifies database-object structure, and distinguishes it from data manipulation language (DML), which creates, updates, and deletes data.

For an SQL or relational-database question, “data definition language” is usually the relevant framing. For a particular legacy system or named format, use that system’s own definition rather than assuming that every DDL has the same syntax or purpose.

Berkeley’s SDA documentation calls its DDL a metadata format for describing dataset characteristics. OpenDDL’s project describes its language as intended for information exchange and says it originated with Open Game Engine Exchange. Neither usage makes those formats interchangeable with database DDL.

How to tell which DDL someone means
- Check the domain. Is the discussion about database schemas, study-dataset metadata, or general information exchange?
- Check the object being described. It may be database objects and relationships, study variables and their metadata, or more general structured data.
- Check the storage relationship. A logical schema description is not automatically a physical storage map or a data-file format.
- Use the system’s documentation. The abbreviation alone does not establish a shared syntax, scope, or purpose.
