Finite element analysis (FEA) uses the finite element method (FEM) to estimate how a physical object or system will behave. It divides the modeled region into smaller pieces, represents the relevant physics with equations, solves those equations, and presents the results for interpretation. Those results are estimates—not measurements—and are only as useful as the model, inputs, and numerical checks behind them.
What is finite element analysis?
FEA is an engineering analysis technique for estimating a system’s response to physical conditions. The finite element method is the underlying mathematical approach; FEA is its application to a model and the interpretation of the resulting solution. The method can be used for different kinds of physics, including structural behavior, heat transfer, and electromagnetic fields, but an individual analysis solves the physics it was set up to represent. Ansys explains the distinction between FEM and FEA.
For example, an engineer estimating how a loaded bracket might deform would model the bracket’s geometry and material, represent how it is attached, apply the load, and solve for quantities such as displacement and derived stress. The result describes that modeled case; it does not automatically establish how every real bracket will behave.
How does FEA work?
A real object is continuous, while a computer model needs a finite set of unknowns. FEM bridges that gap by dividing the modeled region into elements joined at nodes. The software approximates the relevant physical quantities within each element, assembles the element equations into a system for the whole model, and computes a solution.

What the equations solve for depends on the analysis. A structural model may calculate displacement, from which stress can be derived; a thermal model may calculate temperature. Geometry, material behavior, loads, supports, boundary conditions, and any required initial conditions are specified as model inputs. The software does not infer all of them simply from a shape.
What are the main steps in an FEA workflow?
- Define the question. Decide what response matters and which physics to model—for example, structural or thermal behavior—and whether the case is static, transient, linear, or nonlinear.
- Prepare the geometry. Represent the part or region and simplify it only when removing a detail will not control the result you need.
- Set properties and conditions. Assign material behavior and specify loads, supports or other boundary conditions, and initial conditions where required.
- Create the mesh. Divide the model into elements and nodes. Element formulation, shape, and density affect how well the model can represent the behavior of interest.
- Solve the equations. The software assembles the element equations and computes the model’s response.
- Interpret and check the output. Inspect the quantities that answer the engineering question, assess mesh and model quality, refine the mesh where appropriate, and compare results with independent evidence.
This is often grouped into preprocessing, solution, and postprocessing. The key is not merely to complete the solve: it is to establish that the setup and result are appropriate for the question.

How fine should the element mesh be?
There is no universally correct element size. A finer mesh adds degrees of freedom and can better resolve small features or steep changes in a field, but it also costs more computing time and resources. A coarse mesh may miss important behavior. The right density depends on the output of interest and where that output is sensitive.
Refine the mesh in important regions and compare the relevant results across progressively refined meshes. If successive solutions are nearly the same, the mesh may be adequate for that comparison; substantial changes suggest more refinement or investigation may be needed. This is guidance, not a universal numerical pass criterion. Local refinement or submodeling can add detail where it matters without refining the entire model. Ansys notes that mesh shape alone does not establish result accuracy, and that excessive refinement can waste resources. Its guidance on choosing a mesh size is candid: “Unfortunately, no one can give you a definitive answer.” Ansys overview · Ansys Help: Determining the Appropriate Mesh Density · Ansys Help: Meshing Your Solid Model.

How can you tell whether an FEA result is trustworthy?
A solver can produce a numerical answer even when the model poorly represents the real situation. NIST’s 2018 discussion of finite element solution uncertainty identifies influences that include computing platform, element type, degrees of freedom or mesh density, convergence assessment, geometric parameters, material properties, loading, and model uncertainty. A credible result therefore requires attention to both the numerical solution and the assumptions that describe the physical problem. NIST: Finite Element Method Solution Uncertainty, Asymptotic Solution, and a New Approach to Accuracy Assessment.
Verification: was the numerical problem solved adequately?
Verification concerns whether the numerical model was solved with adequate numerical accuracy. Mesh-refinement comparisons are one useful check. Depending on the problem, results may also be compared with an analytical solution, another analysis, hand calculations, or test data. No single check is sufficient for every application.

Validation: does the model represent the real system?
Validation asks whether the model represents the real system well enough for its intended use. A numerically stable result cannot correct unrealistic material properties, missing geometry, or inappropriate loads and supports. The evidence needed depends on what decision the analysis is meant to support.
Why a smooth contour plot is not proof
A polished plot is a visualization, not an accuracy test. Results near sharp corners, point loads, idealized constraints, contacts, or material discontinuities may be sensitive to modeling and mesh choices. Report the assumptions and conditions that matter, the relevant convergence evidence, and the basis for any comparison. There is no general error percentage or mesh threshold that establishes correctness for every model.
