AppTrail is an open-source, self-hosted tool that records how selected apps appear for chosen keywords in the Apple App Store and Google Play, and whether they are mentioned or cited in selected AI search experiences. Its dashboard stores observations for later comparison; the search requests themselves run through a SerpApi account and can use that account’s credits.
What AppTrail tracks
You configure the apps, search terms or questions, countries, language and collection frequency. AppTrail saves checks so you can review rankings and changes over time rather than relying on a single search.
App Store and Google Play rankings
For a store keyword such as “habit tracker”, AppTrail can track selected apps’ positions in Apple App Store and Google Play results. It supports viewing ranking-position distributions and cases where an app was not found. You can compare selected apps for the same keyword, store and country.
AI mentions and citations
For questions such as “Which apps help build daily habits?”, AppTrail checks Google AI Mode, Google AI Overviews and Bing Copilot for mentions of an app and links to its website or store listing. A mention and a citation are separate signals: an answer may name an app without linking to it, or provide a link that is worth distinguishing from a textual mention.

Listing changes
AppTrail can collect changes to listing details such as titles, descriptions, versions, pricing, icons and screenshots. This feature is optional. Its timeline starts when collection is enabled, so enabling it later does not reconstruct earlier listing states.
Comparisons, alerts and saved evidence
AppTrail lets you compare selected apps for a keyword and store, compare results across countries, and compare app mentions or citations for AI questions. The project describes a query matrix with timestamps and links to saved evidence, which can help you inspect what a recorded result represents.
Checks can be run manually or scheduled daily, weekly, every two weeks or monthly. The launch announcement describes ranking-loss alerts as requiring two successful checks that confirm a qualifying loss after an app had ranked in the top 10.

Search history can be exported as CSV, and you can download a workspace backup. A backup is not a complete archive of every underlying file: the package documentation says bulky or raw material, including archived images and raw SerpApi responses, is omitted, while saved results and other evidence remain.
What you need to run it
AppTrail is self-hosted. The Python Package Index documentation lists Python 3.11 or newer and describes running it with uvx apptrail, or installing it with pip and then running apptrail. A Docker option is also documented. AppTrail 1.0.0 was released on October 1, 2026, according to its PyPI release metadata; the project lists an MIT license expression.

For scheduled collection, the AppTrail process or container must remain running. You can close the browser without stopping collection. Account data and tracking history persist in the AppTrail data directory or configured Docker volume. If the service is stopped, existing history remains, but observations that would have been collected during downtime cannot be recreated; overdue checks resume when the service starts again.

AppTrail sends searches through the SerpApi account you provide. Discovery, listing verification, tracking, listing-history collection, manual checks and retries may consume credits. AppTrail provides usage estimates, so use those for your chosen configuration and check SerpApi’s current account terms before relying on a budget.
In its September 30, 2026 launch announcement, SerpApi gave a specific example: five weekly runs at the default search depth could use up to 160 credits. The announcement also stated that SerpApi included 250 free search credits per month at that time. These are a dated, configuration-specific example and offer statement, not a guaranteed current allowance or a universal cost per AppTrail check. Is AppTrail a fit for your monitoring?
AppTrail is most relevant if you want a self-hosted history of app-store keyword visibility and selected AI answer visibility, and are prepared to operate the service and supply a search API account. Before choosing a tool, compare the coverage and operating model that matter for your work:

Whether it saves results and evidence over time.

Whether it supports competitor comparisons and listing history.

What must stay running, where data persists, and who maintains the installation.

AppTrail’s announcement and package documentation describe its features and requirements, but do not establish independent performance results or a neutral head-to-head advantage over other trackers. Treat it as a stated feature set to evaluate against your own monitoring needs.
