Capcom confirmed that attackers stole information from its networks during a ransomware attack detected on November 2, 2020. Its final public investigation, released April 13, 2021, traced the initial access to an older backup VPN device at its North American subsidiary. Capcom’s confirmed count of people whose personal information was compromised was revised during the investigation; it is distinct from a much larger estimate of people whose data might have been exposed.
What happened in the Capcom attack?
Capcom said it detected internal network connectivity problems on November 2, 2020, shut down systems, and confirmed a ransomware attack that encrypted data on company devices. In its final investigation, Capcom said the attackers had gained access in October by targeting an older backup VPN device maintained at Capcom U.S.A. The company had newer VPN devices but retained the older unit as an emergency backup during network strain associated with the COVID-19 situation in California. Capcom said it had since removed that device. Capcom’s April 13, 2021 report
Capcom reported that compromised devices in its U.S. and Japanese offices led to information theft, and that some devices were later infected with ransomware. Encrypted files affected access to systems including email and file servers. The company also said it found a threatening message from a group identifying itself as Ragnar Locker and contacted Osaka Prefectural Police. The group name is Capcom’s identification; the company did not publish a verified motive or amount of data stolen.
How many people were affected?
Capcom’s figures changed as its investigation progressed. A confirmed count means the company verified that personal information was compromised; the potential figure is a maximum estimate, not a count of confirmed victims.

In January, Capcom said lost logs meant it could not specifically determine the potential total. It also removed about 18,000 North American Capcom Store and esports records from its earlier estimate after finding no evidence that those records had been compromised. The April report revised the cumulative confirmed count downward to 15,649 while leaving the potential figure unchanged. These are Capcom’s published figures, not an independent tally. What information was stolen?
Capcom listed names, addresses, phone numbers, email addresses, and human-resources information among the personal-data categories involved. It also identified company and business information such as sales reports, financial information, game-development documents, and business-partner information. The published categories do not mean every item applied to every affected person, nor that each category was verified as compromised in the same way.

Capcom said credit-card information was not included because online transactions were handled by a third-party provider on a separate system. It also said the affected network areas were unrelated to the online systems used to play or purchase Capcom games. Those statements describe the scope Capcom reported for this incident; they are not a general assurance about every Capcom account or system.
Did Capcom find evidence of misuse or a ransom demand?
In its April 2021 report, Capcom said it had not confirmed damage resulting from actual misuse of compromised information “at this point in time.” That is a time-bound finding from the report, not proof that misuse never occurred later. The company said the ransomware message instructed it to contact the threat actor to negotiate but did not state a ransom amount. Capcom said it did not know the amount demanded and did not contact the threat actor. Capcom’s report

What security changes did Capcom report?
Capcom said its external-specialist investigation was completed in March 2021, with findings received on March 31 and published April 13. At that time, it reported steps including continuous security operations center (SOC) monitoring and endpoint detection and response (EDR), cleaning compromised devices, rechecking VPN-device safety, reviewing business accounts, and improving VPN and device management, including long-term log storage. It also established a security oversight committee involving external specialists. These are company-reported measures at the time of the report, not a current independent assessment of Capcom’s security.
