Learning graphics programming can make systems concepts tangible: a mouse click lands in the wrong place, a cube rotates around an unexpected point, or a frame appears with faces in the wrong order. In a first-person DEV Community essay published October 1, 2026, Viraj Jamdhade describes tracing those visible mistakes from coordinates and matrices through the rendering pipeline, then asking how similar work maps onto GPU hardware. The result is a useful learning path—not a performance benchmark or a guide to modern OpenGL.
Why start with a visible drawing error?
Jamdhade’s essay follows a progression from small C/C++ graphics programs to early CUDA and OpenCL exploration. Its central teaching advantage is observability: when a drawing is misplaced, distorted, or rendered in the wrong order, the program exposes a mistake in a way that can be easier to reason about than an invisible systems bug.
The author’s path used native Windows/Win32 setup, FreeGLUT with OpenGL, transformations and projections, depth testing, double buffering, generated geometry, and L-systems. The examples are learning exercises, not a formal tutorial or controlled comparison. Jamdhade describes glBegin(GL_TRIANGLES) and glEnd as legacy OpenGL, selected for conceptual simplicity—not as a recommendation for new production rendering code. Read the DEV Community essay.
Why can the same point have different coordinates?
Coordinates only make sense relative to a space. In the essay’s Win32 mouse-input example, screen coordinates start at the top-left and Y increases downward. The OpenGL drawing setup uses a different coordinate convention, so a click must be mapped before it can line up with a drawn object.

Jamdhade shows converting screen positions into a normalized range and flipping Y as part of that mapping. That is an explanation of the essay’s setup, not a universal rule for every OpenGL application: the actual mapping depends on the window dimensions, viewport, projection, and coordinate spaces used by a program.
This makes questions such as “Why didn’t my mouse click line up with my drawing?” and “Where do my vertices actually live?” practical debugging prompts. Before changing the drawing, identify the space each value belongs to and the transformations between them.
How does transform order change what an object does?
Translation and rotation are matrix operations, and their order generally matters. Jamdhade reports that swapping translation and rotation changed a cube from spinning in place to orbiting. The difference is not a rendering glitch: the operations are noncommutative, so applying them in a different order changes the resulting position and orientation.

This is why a question like “Why is (0.5, 0.0, 0.0) on the right?” cannot be answered just by looking at the point’s three numbers. Its observed location depends on the coordinate space and the sequence of transformations applied to it.

Projection determines how a 3D scene is represented on a 2D image. The essay contrasts orthographic projection, which does not make distant objects appear smaller, with perspective projection, which does. Aspect ratio matters too: if the projection does not account for the dimensions of the display area, the image can appear stretched.
The essay also describes gluLookAt as transforming the world so the eye is at the origin. This is a useful way to understand a view transform: instead of imagining the camera moving through an unchanged world, think of the scene being expressed relative to the camera.

How does a scene become pixels?
Jamdhade summarizes rendering as a sequence: vertex transformation, clipping, viewport mapping, rasterization, depth testing, and pixel writes. Each stage helps explain a different class of visible result: transformed positions determine where geometry goes, rasterization produces fragments, and depth testing decides which surface is in front.
Depth testing resolves visible surface order
In the author’s cube exercise, enabling depth testing corrected the visible face ordering. Without an appropriate depth test, drawing order alone can leave the wrong face appearing in front. The example shows how a visual defect can point toward a specific stage in the pipeline.
Double buffering avoids showing a partly drawn frame
Jamdhade also used double buffering so that a viewer would not see the image while it was still being drawn. The program renders to a back buffer and presents the completed frame, rather than exposing intermediate drawing to the display.

Instead of specifying every shape by hand, the author describes generating geometry with computation: loops for grids, trigonometric functions for cylinders, and rewriting rules combined with turtle state for L-systems. These examples show how a compact rule can produce a large amount of visible structure.
Jamdhade reports that performance became a problem as an L-system string grew. The essay does not provide controlled timings, so it supports a qualitative lesson—generated work can grow enough to expose performance limits—not a claim about a particular algorithm’s speed or scaling.

What changes when work moves from CPU to GPU?
The essay’s CPU example adds arrays in a loop. Its CUDA illustration assigns each output element to a thread, with each thread identified using its block and thread position. That shift makes the key question explicit: which pieces of the work can be done independently?
| Question | CPU loop example | CUDA kernel example |
|---|---|---|
| How is work expressed? | A loop processes array elements. | Threads process indexed output elements. |
| What must the task offer? | Sequential processing is sufficient for the illustration. | Independent element-wise work can be assigned across threads. |
| What performance evidence does the essay provide? | No measured timing is reported. | No measured speedup is reported. |
The comparison is about expressing independent work, not proof that the GPU is faster. Jamdhade emphasizes data movement as part of the calculation: copying inputs and results can cost more than the computation itself in some workloads. Whether GPU execution helps depends on the amount and structure of work, how much can run independently, and the cost of getting data to and from the device.
What does the graphics-to-systems connection leave open?
The essay’s progression makes graphics a way to ask increasingly lower-level questions: how values move between spaces, how operations compose, how a pipeline orders work, and how hardware can execute independent tasks. As Jamdhade puts it, “Every layer I explored, from coordinates to matrices to the pipeline to the hardware, led to another layer underneath.”
The author says their OpenCL work was still at a reading-and-confusion stage. Modern OpenGL, profiling, and finding a useful parallel workload are framed as future study, not completed work. The essay therefore offers a learning narrative and a conceptual route into systems—not a complete API reference, a measured CPU-versus-GPU result, or evidence that a graphics exercise automatically translates into production GPU performance.
