A kernel build error can come from missing host tools, stale configuration, an inconsistent toolchain, or a genuine source-code problem. Find the first fatal diagnostic in the full build output and identify which build stage failed before changing anything; the final “make” failure line usually does not explain the cause.
Start with the first fatal diagnostic
Save the complete output, then work backward from the final failure to the earliest error that stopped a command from succeeding. Record the kernel revision, host distribution, target architecture, compiler and toolchain, and relevant configuration. Without the log and these details, there is no reliable way to name one fix: the title describes a class of failures, not a single kernel defect.
- Missing command or development file: a host dependency may be absent or too old.
- Configuration or generated-file error: configuration may be incomplete, out of date, or unable to generate a required prerequisite.
- Compiler or assembler diagnostic: check toolchain compatibility, target architecture, and compiler selection.
- Source compilation or link error: investigate the specific file, options, and reproducibility only after checking the build environment.
The kernel project’s bug verification guide notes that a build error can arise from machine setup or from code. A failed build alone does not demonstrate a source bug.
Identify the build stage that failed
Kbuild handles configuration, prepares prerequisites, recursively builds targets, and links the resulting objects. The stage matters: a missing preparation tool is a different problem from a compiler diagnostic attached to a kernel source file. See the Kbuild documentation for how the build system organizes this work.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- Configuration: inspect the configuration command and any reported symbol or option issues.
- Preparation: look for missing host programs, libraries, generated headers, or other prerequisites.
- Compilation: note the failing source file, compiler, flags, and complete diagnostic.
- Linking: check the linker’s first reported unresolved symbol or incompatibility rather than treating the final target failure as the cause.
Check host tools and optional dependencies
Kernel source is not the only requirement: building it also depends on software installed on the host. The current Linux kernel requirements page gives minimum versions for selected tools. It lists GNU make 4.0, Bash 4.2, binutils 2.30, flex 2.5.35, and bison 2.0. These are minimums from the documentation, not a guarantee that those versions alone are sufficient for every architecture or configuration.
| Tool | Minimum listed version | Qualification |
|---|---|---|
| GNU make | 4.0 | Listed minimum; check the target kernel’s other requirements. |
| Bash | 4.2 | Listed minimum; requirements can vary with architecture and configuration. |
| Binutils | 2.30 | Listed minimum; target architecture and enabled options matter. |
| Flex | 2.5.35 | Listed minimum; not every listed tool explains every failure. |
| Bison | 2.0 | Listed minimum; check the requirements for the specific build. |
| GCC | 8.1 | Shown as a minimum table entry; the documentation says requirements can vary by CPU. |
Optional features can require additional dependencies. For example, BTF generation needs pahole; LLVM, Rust, and bindgen support have their own requirements. Depending on the configuration and tools in use, development files for components such as OpenSSL, libelf, or configuration interfaces may also be relevant. Do not install every possible dependency by default: match the missing program or file in the diagnostic to the feature and build path that needs it.

Check configuration when changing kernel releases
An existing .config may not map cleanly to a newer kernel. Symbols can be added, renamed, or changed between releases, so a configuration carried forward from an older tree can leave options unresolved or produce an unsuitable build. Review newly introduced or changed symbols and the configuration changes for the target release; do not assume that running oldconfig by itself has settled every issue. The kernel project’s Kconfig documentation describes kernel configuration.
Keep compiler settings consistent
GCC is not the only supported compiler route. The requirements documentation lists GCC 8.1 as a minimum table entry, while warning that compiler requirements vary by CPU; it identifies Clang/LLVM as optional and does not guarantee that older LLVM versions will work. Choose a compiler compatible with the kernel revision and architecture rather than treating one version as universal.

For an LLVM build, pass the intended compiler and LLVM-related settings consistently to both configuration and build commands. If the settings differ, the build may use an unintended or mismatched toolchain. For cross-compilation, also verify that the target architecture and toolchain settings correspond to the intended target, not just the host running the build. The kernel’s LLVM build documentation covers compiler selection and build settings.

If required tools are present, configuration and target settings are coherent, and the same source-level failure is reproducible, use the project’s verification guidance to check the suspected problem against supported kernel sources. Include the exact revision, architecture, configuration, toolchain, and first fatal diagnostic when seeking help. A build failure by itself is not evidence that mainline source is defective.
