Angular’s built-in route-transition option uses the browser View Transitions API. Enable it with withViewTransitions() in a standalone router setup or enableViewTransitions: true in an NgModule application. Angular labels the integration a developer preview; in browsers without the API, routing still works but navigation has no view-transition animation.
Choose the route setup that matches your app
Angular supports two configuration styles. Use the one your application already uses rather than adding a second router configuration.

This integration is a progressive enhancement: a browser that does not support the View Transitions API still performs the route navigation, without the animation. Check current browser compatibility for the View Transitions API before relying on a transition as essential feedback.
How Angular’s route transition works
During navigation, Angular prepares the route change and activates and deactivates routes within the browser’s view-transition callback. The browser captures the old and new rendered states and displays the transition between them. The integration is intended to connect route states visually; it does not change whether the router can navigate.

Route activation is not a mechanism for waiting for page data. Angular states in its route transition guide: “Angular Router does not provide a way to delay view transitions.” Keep the animation focused on the transition between rendered states rather than assuming content that arrives asynchronously will be included in the same capture.
Connect a shared element across routes
To make an item such as a product image or profile picture appear to move between route views, assign the old and new DOM elements the same view-transition-name. Then define how the browser should animate the old and new snapshots with the matching ::view-transition-old(name) and ::view-transition-new(name) pseudo-elements.

Place those pseudo-element rules in a global stylesheet. Angular’s component style encapsulation can prevent component-scoped rules from targeting the transition pseudo-elements correctly. The official guide includes the relevant shared-element and styling details: Route transition animations.
Adjust transitions based on navigation
Use Angular’s onViewTransitionCreated callback when transition behavior should depend on the navigation. It provides the browser ViewTransition and the route snapshots, allowing the application to inspect what changed. Angular’s guide demonstrates skipping the animation for navigations limited to a URL fragment or query parameters while allowing navigation to complete normally.

Consult the callback example and types in the Angular route transition guide rather than treating every URL change as a reason to animate the whole view.

- Use Router View Transitions when you want visual continuity between two route states, including a shared element that appears in both views.
- Use
animate.enterandanimate.leavewhen individual elements enter or leave the DOM within a view. Angular applies CSS classes for these lifecycle effects, and event bindings can invoke animation functions or third-party libraries. See Angular’s enter and leave animation guide.
For new element lifecycle animations, use the current animate.enter and animate.leave guidance. Angular’s legacy transition animation API is marked deprecated since v20.2, with removal intended in v23; check the transition API documentation when maintaining an existing application.
