A gamepad is the familiar handheld kind, but racing wheels, arcade sticks, joysticks, and accessible gamepads are controllers too. The label alone does not mean a device works with every game or platform.
What does “video game controller” mean?
A video game controller translates a player’s actions—such as pressing a button, moving a stick, or turning a wheel—into input a video game can use. The Illinois State Board of Education describes a game controller as a device used with games or entertainment systems to provide input, typically to control an object or character. Its examples include gamepads, joysticks, paddles, steering wheels, and light guns.
In Apple’s developer terminology, controllers can be physical or virtual. Apple describes a virtual controller as a software emulation configured for a game, so the word can refer to more than a separately purchased accessory in that context. This does not mean every on-screen control or input method is formally classified as a controller by every platform.
Apple’s archived Game Controller Programming Guide puts the basic role simply: “Game controllers provide physical controls to trigger actions in your game.”

Is a gamepad different from a controller?
Yes. Controller is the broader category; gamepad usually means the handheld form with directional and action controls that many people associate with console play. Microsoft’s XInput documentation describes a standard gamepad with sticks, triggers, a directional pad, and standard buttons. A racing wheel or arcade stick is still a controller, but it is not a conventional gamepad.
Common types of video game controllers
- Gamepad: A handheld layout of directional controls and action buttons, often with sticks and triggers.
- Racing wheel: A driving-focused device with steering input and accelerator or brake controls. Microsoft documents it as a distinct controller subtype.
- Arcade stick: A stick-and-button layout treated as a separate subtype in Microsoft’s XInput documentation.
- Joystick and pedals: Analog-input devices used in some games. The W3C Gamepad specification notes that its support also accommodates related gaming devices such as joysticks, driving wheels, and pedals.
- Accessible gamepad: A controller designed to support different access needs. The W3C specification names the Xbox Adaptive Controller and PlayStation Access Controller as examples of accessible gamepad models.
- Virtual controller: Software emulation configured for a game, as described in Apple’s Game Controller documentation.
These are examples, not a complete universal taxonomy. Platform APIs classify devices according to their own profiles and supported use cases.

How to tell whether a controller will work with your game
Compatibility depends on the particular controller, game, and platform. Apple’s framework uses controller profiles, and Microsoft notes that a racing wheel may present itself as more than one GameInput device type. A device name by itself is not proof of support.
- Game and input style: Check whether the game supports a gamepad, wheel, arcade stick, or another input type.
- Platform and profile: Confirm support for the specific console, computer, or mobile device and its controller profile.
- Controls and configuration: Compare the device’s buttons, sticks, triggers, wheel, or pedals with what the game needs. Check whether control remapping or other configuration is available if relevant.
- Connection: Check whether the device connects in a way your platform supports. Apple’s archived guide notes that controllers may connect by wire or wirelessly.
For current support details, consult the particular game’s and platform’s documentation along with the controller maker’s compatibility information.
