The Python Software Foundation (PSF) announced on January 13, 2026, that Anthropic would contribute $1.5 million over two years. The partnership is intended to support the foundation’s work, with an emphasis on security across the Python ecosystem; the PSF described planned projects, not completed results or a published spending breakdown.
Why is Anthropic contributing to the PSF?
The PSF said the contribution will support its work “with an emphasis on Python ecosystem security.” The foundation named CPython, the implementation of Python, and the Python Package Index (PyPI), where developers publish and install Python packages, as parts of that ecosystem. The announcement presents the funding as support for security work alongside the PSF’s wider language, infrastructure, and community responsibilities. Python Software Foundation announcement, January 13, 2026.
What does the PSF plan to do with the contribution?
Develop proactive PyPI package-review tools
The PSF intends to develop tools for automated, proactive review of packages uploaded to PyPI. It described the existing process as reactive-only; the planned tools are meant to help identify potential threats earlier. The announcement does not say that these tools are complete or that they have prevented attacks.
Create a dataset of known malware
The planned work also includes a dataset of known malware for capability analysis. The PSF expects the work to be transferable to other open-source package repositories, but the announcement does not establish that the dataset or tools are already deployed elsewhere. PSF announcement.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Continue broader foundation programs and infrastructure
The contribution is also intended to support the Developer in Residence program, community grants and other programs, and core infrastructure such as PyPI. The PSF did not publish a dollar allocation among security tooling, infrastructure, development, grants, or other work.
Does the announcement mean PyPI is safer now?
Not on the evidence in the announcement. It describes intended work, rather than a completed security upgrade or measured reduction in malicious packages. The proposed review tools and malware dataset could strengthen future analysis, but their status, deployment, and effect are not established by the funding announcement.

For context, a separate February 2026 PSF security explainer says the Python Security Response Team coordinates vulnerability reporting and remediation, and reports 16 advisories for CPython and pip in 2025. That is a retrospective count, not an outcome of Anthropic’s contribution. PSF security information.
What is known about the payment and the partnership?
The PSF announced a total contribution of $1.5 million over two years. The announcement does not state an installment schedule or say that the full amount was disbursed immediately, so it should not be read as a confirmed annual payment of $750,000. It also does not provide a detailed budget or measured impact figures.

The PSF’s current sponsor page lists Anthropic as a Visionary Sponsor, while noting that sponsor support does not mean the foundation endorses a sponsor’s specific activities. That general sponsor listing is separate context; it does not disclose the terms or payment status of this particular two-year contribution. PSF sponsors.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How does the partnership fit the PSF’s wider security priorities?
The PSF’s Strategic Plan 2026, covering 2026–2031, includes securing Python’s software supply chain and distribution infrastructure. The foundation says its board adopted the plan on July 8, 2026. This is consistent with the partnership’s security emphasis, but does not show that Anthropic’s contribution caused or paid for the plan. PSF board records.
