Linux Mint 22 made its Software Manager load faster, according to the Mint team, and changed how it presents Flatpak publisher information. The release notes say the main window appears instantly, but give no benchmark or test conditions. The safety change is more specific: verified Flatpaks show their maintainer, while unverified ones are disabled by default and warned about if enabled.
What changed in Linux Mint 22’s Software Manager?
Linux Mint’s Mint 22 feature notes describe three interface and performance changes to mintinstall, the Software Manager:
- Improved multi-threading, which Mint associates with faster loading.
- A new preferences page.
- A banner slideshow.
Mint says the app “loads faster than before and the main window appears instantly.” The notes do not provide a measured load time, hardware details, or a before-and-after test, so this is the project’s qualitative description rather than a quantified performance result.
How does the Flatpak safety change work?
The change concerns publisher identity and visibility in the Software Manager. For verified Flatpaks, the interface shows the maintainer’s name. Unverified Flatpaks are disabled by default; if you enable them, the manager warns about the risks and marks those apps as unverified. Mint’s notes also say unverified apps have no reviews and no score.

Mint’s explanation of verification focuses on whether an app comes from its original developer or a third party approved by that developer. That makes verification a useful identity signal, not a guarantee that an app is free of vulnerabilities, behaves safely, or will remain trustworthy. You should still consider who maintains an app and whether you trust its source.
Are unverified Flatpaks safe to install?
“Unverified” does not by itself establish that an app is malicious, but it means the publisher relationship has not been verified in the way Mint describes. Mint’s default is to keep these apps out of the normal Software Manager experience unless a user enables them. If you choose to enable one, weigh the lack of verification, reviews, and score against your confidence in the app and its maintainer.

The Mint team raised this issue in a June 3, 2024 blog discussion, noting that users need enough information to make informed software-source decisions. That page reported that 42% of Flatpaks had been verified by Flathub at the time. It is a dated 2024 figure, not a current verification rate.

Mint 22.2 is a later LTS release, supported until 2029, but its notes do not attribute the original faster-loading claim to that release. They describe a better-looking Software Manager welcome screen and help explaining the difference between Flatpak and system packages.
