Valve’s Steam client update released October 2, 2025 added a safeguard for Unity CVE-2025-59489: if Steam detects an exploit attempt, the client blocks the game from launching. This is a Steam-side mitigation, not a fix for every affected game. Unity separately made a patch available on the same date and directs developers to its advisory for affected and fixed versions.
What changed in the Steam client update?
Valve’s October 2, 2025 Steam Client Update says it “Added mitigations for Unity CVE-2025-59489, blocking a game launch through the Steam Client when an exploit attempt is detected.” Valve also said the new client would be downloaded automatically.
The described action is conditional: Steam blocks a game launch when it detects an exploit attempt. Valve’s release notes do not say that this client behavior patches vulnerable game files or replaces fixes from the game’s developer.
What is Unity CVE-2025-59489?
Unity’s official security advisory says applications built with affected Unity Editor versions are susceptible to unsafe file loading and local file inclusion. Depending on the operating system, exploitation could allow local code execution or information disclosure at the privilege level of the vulnerable application.

Unity lists June 4, 2025 as the discovery date and October 2, 2025 as the date a patch became available. The advisory names RyotaK of GMO Flatt Security Inc. as the discoverer. Unity also reported: “There is no evidence of any exploitation of the vulnerability nor has there been any impact on users or customers.” That statement describes what Unity reported in its advisory; it does not establish that exploitation was impossible.
How Steam’s mitigation differs from Unity’s fix

The measures serve different points in the chain. A Steam launch block is not evidence that a particular game’s build has been updated. For a project or game, developers should use Unity’s advisory and version tables to determine the relevant remediation rather than infer coverage from one release-note example.

What developers should check

Open Unity’s CVE-2025-59489 advisory and identify whether the project’s Unity Editor version and target platform are listed as affected.

Use Unity’s affected and fixed version tables to select the applicable remediation for that project. Unity’s release notes for Unity 6000.0.58f2 specifically list “Scripting: Addressed CVE-2025-59489.” That is one documented fixed release, not a universal version recommendation for every project or platform.

Update and validate the game build using the applicable Unity guidance. The Steam client mitigation is separate and should not be treated as a substitute for updating an affected application.

Valve said in the 2025 announcement that Steam Client support for Windows 10 32-bit would end January 1, 2026 at 10 a.m.; that stated deadline has passed. The same notes said the client would continue to run on Windows 10 64-bit and that 32-bit games would continue to be supported. These are statements from that dated announcement, not a current support-status confirmation.
