The Jenkins Security Team says the flaw can let an agent process, code running on an agent, or an attacker with Agent/Connect permission bypass a deserialization filter and potentially execute code on the Jenkins controller. The fixes named in the August 5, 2026 advisory are Jenkins weekly 2.576 and LTS 2.568.2.
What the Jenkins vulnerability does
Jenkins uses its Remoting library—commonly distributed as agent.jar or remoting.jar—to exchange serialized Java objects between agents and the controller. The JEP-200 filter is intended to constrain which classes the controller will deserialize. In affected Remoting versions, the filter was not applied when the deserialization code resolved classes through a fallback path.
The Jenkins Security Team describes the consequence this way: “This allows agent processes, code running on agents, and attackers with Agent/Connect permission to bypass the JEP-200 deserialization filter for classes on the Jenkins core classpath, which could be leveraged to execute code on the Jenkins controller.” See the Jenkins Security Advisory 2026-08-05.
Who and what are in scope
This is an agent-to-controller issue with stated access and classpath conditions. It is not evidence that every Jenkins installation can be taken over by an unauthenticated internet attacker. The advisory limits the relevant classes to those bundled with Jenkins or in the Java platform that are not on the pre-JEP-200 denylist. It says dependencies bundled with plugins will not be deserialized through this issue.

Which Jenkins versions are affected and fixed
The August 5 advisory lists the following Jenkins release ranges for CVE-2026-70426. Weekly and LTS are separate tracks, so follow the row matching the track you run.

The advisory identifies an exception for Remoting version 3355.3357.v931d3c992987. Check the advisory for the exact scope and applicability of that exception rather than assuming it changes the Jenkins release thresholds for every installation.

How to remediate CVE-2026-70426
- Identify your release track and version. Check the Jenkins version shown by your controller and determine whether it is on the weekly or LTS line.
- Update to the corresponding fix. For this vulnerability, the Jenkins project names weekly 2.576 and LTS 2.568.2 as fixed. Use the appropriate release channel and your normal change-management process.
- Verify the resulting installation. Confirm the controller is running the intended fixed build and review your agent connectivity and jobs after the upgrade.
- If you cannot update, consult the official workaround instructions. The advisory links to a workaround repository, but its steps should be followed directly from that repository; do not substitute unverified configuration changes.
For a present-day upgrade decision, check the Jenkins project’s current release information as well as the vulnerability advisory. The version information established here does not identify the latest Jenkins release as of October 4, 2026.

A later advisory dated September 2, 2026 lists weekly versions through 2.579 and LTS versions through 2.568.2 as affected by vulnerabilities disclosed in that September advisory, with fixes in weekly 2.580 and LTS 2.568.3. Those are separate issues and release guidance; they do not mean CVE-2026-70426 was newly affected again. Consult the Jenkins Security Advisory 2026-09-02 for those later vulnerabilities, and use the August advisory for this CVE.
