To self-host Fluxer, run its official multi-service Docker Compose deployment on a server you administer, then maintain the instance and its data yourself. Fluxer describes browser and official mobile-app access for self-hosted instances; desktop support is still forthcoming, and federation between separate servers is in progress. The official material does not establish a universal server size or hosting cost, so plan for your workload rather than relying on an unsupported minimum.
What Fluxer is and what self-hosting changes
Fluxer is an open-source messaging and VoIP platform for friends, groups, and communities. Its feature set includes text chat, voice and video calls, screen sharing, channels, Markdown and code blocks, file sharing, link previews, emoji and stickers, roles, and moderation tools. You can use Fluxer’s hosted service, Fluxer.app, or operate a separate instance on a server you control. Fluxer’s homepage describes the product and current client availability.
With a self-hosted instance, you take responsibility for the server and its stored data rather than relying on Fluxer to operate that instance. Fluxer says a self-hosted instance does not phone home or depend on a centralized login system, and that Fluxer staff cannot ban users from an instance they do not run. These are the project’s descriptions of its design, not the result of an independent security audit. Fluxer’s self-hosting page also makes clear that operators are responsible for server administration and keeping the software updated.
What the deployment includes
Fluxer’s official Docker Compose configuration shows a multi-service application, not a single chat program installed by itself. The stack includes API and gateway components alongside supporting services such as PostgreSQL, Valkey, NATS, Meilisearch, SeaweedFS, and a media proxy. It also defines persistent volumes for data.

This architecture means deployment involves coordinating application services and preserving their data. The Compose file is the place to inspect the current service definitions and configuration; the project’s 2026 roadmap says ready-made installation packages and documentation are available and that self-hosting development takes place in public on GitHub. Follow the current official deployment documentation rather than treating a Compose file alone as a complete operational guide.
What server do you need?
The official material reviewed does not give a tested, universal minimum for CPU, memory, disk capacity, or bandwidth, nor does it establish a monthly hosting price. Per-service memory settings in the Compose configuration are configuration values, not a validated sizing recommendation. The resources needed will depend on the number of users, activity, and data your instance handles; do not treat an individual service setting as a whole-server requirement.

You need an operator-controlled server capable of running the deployment, plus a plan for administering it and maintaining persistent data. A Linux VPS or dedicated server is one possible category of hosting, not a Fluxer-endorsed provider or a required physical product. Before choosing capacity, consult current deployment guidance and assess the intended workload. Domain registration, DNS, and separate backup storage may be relevant for a public deployment, but the cited project sources do not specify universal requirements for them.
Which clients work with a self-hosted instance?
- Web: Fluxer says self-hosted instances can be accessed through a browser.
- Mobile: Fluxer says its official mobile app can connect to a self-hosted instance.
- Desktop: The official site describes desktop-app support as coming soon, so do not assume it is currently available for self-hosting.
Availability can change; check the current Fluxer site before selecting a client or planning a rollout.

Mobile notifications and the push relay
Mobile push notifications for self-hosted instances use a relay operated by Fluxer. The project says Apple and Google deliver notifications to the official app using credentials Fluxer holds, and that its relay enables a self-hosted server to notify phones. Fluxer says it cannot read notification contents and logs delivery details such as the time and app. These privacy details are claims from Fluxer, not independently verified findings. The self-hosting page is the project’s description of the relay.
Can separate Fluxer servers communicate?
Do not assume that two independently operated instances can message one another. Fluxer describes federation—communication between different servers—as in progress on its homepage. Until the project documents and releases that capability, treat each self-hosted instance as separate for planning purposes.

What operators remain responsible for
- Updates and administration: Keep the software and host maintained; Fluxer explicitly assigns these duties to self-hosting operators.
- Persistent data: The Compose deployment defines persistent volumes, so determine how you will protect and restore the data your instance needs. The cited sources do not prescribe a backup schedule or retention policy.
- Capacity and cost: Select server resources and estimate ongoing costs for your expected workload; the official sources do not provide a universal sizing figure or price.
- Client and feature status: Verify current support for desktop access and federation before making them part of your deployment plan.
Hosted Fluxer or self-hosted?
Choose self-hosting when control over the instance and its data is worth taking on server administration, updates, capacity planning, and operational continuity. The hosted service avoids running your own deployment; self-hosting shifts those responsibilities to you. For a comparison, focus on who controls the server and data, who performs maintenance, which clients are supported, how mobile notifications are delivered, whether federation is available, and what hosting and backup arrangements your use case requires.
Fluxer also says self-hosted instances do not have a Plutonium subscription and that operators can use or share the associated perks; it says uploaded files need not expire. Because product policies can change, check the current self-hosting terms before relying on those details.
