Business transparency can build customer confidence, help employees understand decisions, and surface problems sooner—but only when the information is relevant, clear, and shared with appropriate safeguards. It is not a promise of higher sales, and it does not mean disclosing everything. The practical goal is to give each audience information it can use, explain the reasoning behind decisions, and provide a way to ask questions or raise concerns.
How does transparency benefit a business?
Transparency is a deliberate practice of sharing relevant information and the reasons behind decisions in language stakeholders can understand. Its value depends on what is shared, with whom, and whether the organization can respond when people identify a problem.
- Customer confidence: Objective information about performance, products, or service can help customers make informed choices.
- Employee understanding: Explaining goals, decisions, and workplace practices can make organizational intent clearer and support trust.
- Operational learning: Responsible use of workforce data may help with performance, safety, career development, innovation, and agility.
- Governance and risk response: Reporting channels can help identify misconduct early enough for the organization to investigate and act.
These are plausible business benefits, not guaranteed outcomes. The evidence includes surveys, a study abstract with limited accessible methodological detail, and organizational guidance; those sources do not establish a universal financial return.
Why is transparency important in business?
Trust is commercially relevant, but survey responses should not be mistaken for proof that transparency itself causes a particular revenue increase. In PwC’s 2024 U.S. survey, 93% of business executives agreed that building and maintaining trust improves the bottom line. That is executives’ reported belief, not a measured causal estimate. In the same survey, 46% of consumers said they purchased more at companies they trust and 28% said they paid a premium. These figures describe respondents’ answers, not what every business should expect. PwC’s 2024 survey

There is also direct, though bounded, support for customer-facing performance transparency. How can transparency build customer trust?
Give customers information that helps them assess a decision—not an undifferentiated data dump. Useful disclosures may include objective product or service performance information, clear explanations of important terms, and accessible channels for feedback. State what a figure measures and the period it covers; explain limitations that could change how a customer interprets it.

Make it possible to question or correct what is published. If customers find an error or raise a concern, assign responsibility for reviewing it and explain what happens next. A disclosure that is technically available but confusing, outdated, or impossible to query may not build confidence.
How can a business be transparent with employees?
Explain decisions that affect employees in straightforward language: what changed, why it changed, what tradeoffs were considered, and where people can ask questions. Deloitte describes workplace transparency as straightforward sharing of information, motives, and decisions that matter to workers. Its 2024 report says 86% of workers and 74% of leaders surveyed considered increased focus on trust and transparency in the worker-organization relationship very or critically important. These are survey responses, not a measure of the effect of any one transparency program. Deloitte’s 2024 discussion of workforce transparency

Be explicit about workforce data
When collecting or using employee data, tell workers why it is collected, whose data is visible, who can access it, and how it may be used. Set purpose limits and access controls, protect privacy, and involve workers or offer choices where feasible. Data systems framed as surveillance—or used to punish workers without clear safeguards—can undermine the trust transparency is meant to support.
Deloitte reports that workers confident their organization uses workforce data responsibly were 35% more likely to trust it; 37% of workers surveyed said they were very confident in responsible use. These are reported survey findings, not proof that confidence alone caused the trust difference. Deloitte’s 2024 Global Human Capital Trends survey polled 14,000 business and HR leaders in 95 countries; worker-specific findings draw on supplementary surveys described in its article, so the leader survey’s global scope should not be read as proof that every worker finding represents workers worldwide.

Make reporting channels usable
Give employees a clear way to raise ethical or legal concerns, and explain how reports are received, assessed, and followed up. Transparency International says robust reporting channels can help identify misconduct and limit legal, financial, and reputational harm. A channel is a risk-management mechanism, not a guarantee that incidents will be prevented; it does not replace fair investigation or management accountability. | Disclosure topic | Employees saying disclosure is very important | Consumers saying disclosure is very important | Executives saying their companies disclose it |
|---|---|---|---|
| Environmental impact | 45% | 41% | 36% |
| Climate risks | 40% | 39% | 31% |
These percentages are survey responses reported by PwC in 2024, not an audit of every company’s disclosures or a measure of disclosure quality. They can help leaders identify topics stakeholders say matter, but a business should verify what information is accurate, relevant, and appropriate to share before publishing it. PwC’s 2024 survey
How should a business decide what to disclose?
Use a decision process that balances usefulness with privacy, safety, and commercial sensitivity. A good disclosure lets its audience understand or act on something without exposing information that should remain protected.
- Name the audience and purpose. Decide whether customers, employees, investors, or another group needs the information, and what decision or risk it addresses.
- Select relevant, objective information. Share facts that help that audience assess the issue. Add context, definitions, time periods, and important limitations.
- Explain the reasoning. Describe motives, tradeoffs, and consequences in plain language rather than publishing raw figures without interpretation.
- Check risks and access. Review privacy, safety, security, and competitive concerns. For workforce data, set purpose limits and clarify who can see and use it.
- Provide a response path. Make it clear how recipients can ask questions, correct errors, or report concerns—and who is responsible for acting.
- Maintain and evaluate it. Assign ownership for keeping information accurate and timely. Measure outcomes suited to the initiative and audience; trust is not captured fully by satisfaction or engagement alone.
Steelcase CEO Sara Armbruster told Deloitte: “In many ways, transparency goes hand in hand with that. But if you are going to advocate and implement a high degree of transparency, you need to have systems in place to address any issues that arise.” The point is practical: openness needs accountable processes behind it. Deloitte’s 2024 discussion
Quick Recap
What transparency does not mean
- It is not maximal disclosure. Sharing sensitive employee or business information can create privacy, safety, or competitive risks. Choose the information and audience deliberately.
- It is not a guaranteed sales or profit increase. Survey responses and the available study abstract do not establish a universal causal return.
- It is not a substitute for action. Publishing a policy or offering a reporting channel matters only if the business can investigate concerns, correct errors, and address problems.
- It does not settle legal duties. Disclosure obligations depend on jurisdiction, industry, and current law; check the requirements that apply to the specific business.
