There is no direct evidence that solving LeetCode for more than five months produces a specific brain change. Programming-education studies do find some transfer to other skills, but they do not test a five-month LeetCode routine or show that it makes people generally smarter. The most defensible expectation is narrower: sustained, thoughtful practice can build fluency with coding and algorithm problems like the ones you work on.
What might change after months of LeetCode practice?
You may become quicker and more capable at recognizing familiar problem patterns, choosing an approach, and turning an idea into working code. That is learning in the domain you practice—not evidence of a lasting change in brain structure or a general boost to intelligence.
LeetCode describes its Programming Skills study plan as targeting coding-language fluency, implementation skills, and the ability to convert ideas into code. The page’s summary says, “Practice converting ideas into codes.” This describes the platform’s stated aim, not an independent finding that the plan causes cognitive changes.
What programming research says about transfer
A 2019 meta-analysis by Scherer, Siddiq, and Sánchez Viveros combined 105 studies and 539 effect sizes on computer-programming education. It reported an overall transfer effect of g = 0.49 (95% CI [0.37, 0.61]). The authors reported effects in areas including creative thinking, mathematical skills, metacognition, spatial skills, and reasoning; school achievement and literacy benefited least. These pooled findings cover programming education broadly—not LeetCode, a five-month threshold, or a particular adult study routine. Read the 2019 meta-analysis.

Near transfer means applying learning to tasks similar to the practiced material; far transfer means applying it to more distant tasks. The distinction matters: getting better at algorithm questions does not automatically mean getting better at every unfamiliar problem.
Why child coding studies do not settle the LeetCode question
A 2024 systematic review and meta-analysis examined experimental coding and programming interventions involving children, published from 2006 through 2022. It reported its largest outcome for problem solving (dppc2 = 0.89), a moderate result for planning (0.36), and lower results for response inhibition (0.17) and working memory (0.20). Cognitive-flexibility accuracy was the exception to significant improvements. These are results for the child interventions included in that review, not estimates for adults solving LeetCode questions. Read the 2024 review.

Five months is not a proven threshold
The available studies do not follow a group solving LeetCode for more than five months, compare that duration with a shorter or longer schedule, isolate the platform from other learning, or demonstrate a corresponding structural brain change. They therefore cannot say what happens at month five, whether any change persists, or how large an individual benefit should be.
Duration alone is also a poor measure of learning. A 2019 review of deliberate-practice research argues that hours logged are insufficient to explain expertise and recommends attention to practice quality, including concentration, analysis, and problem solving. It does not prescribe a five-month dose or prove a particular cognitive benefit. Read the 2019 deliberate-practice review.

How to judge what you have actually learned
- Check coding-specific progress: Can you implement familiar techniques more fluently and explain why your solution works?
- Review how you practice: Solving a problem, analyzing mistakes, and understanding the solution are more informative than counting submissions or calendar time alone.
- Test transfer separately: Try unfamiliar problems or related tasks without relying on a memorized solution. Success there is evidence of performance on those tasks, not proof of a universal brain benefit.
LeetCode’s LeetCode 75 study plan is described as a curated 75-question set for interview preparation, with a suggested one-to-three-month preparation horizon. That is a platform recommendation for interview prep, not a scientifically validated timeline for changing cognition.
