EasyEffects can make weak built-in laptop speakers sound more balanced or make quiet details easier to hear—without buying new hardware. It processes audio on Linux through PipeWire, using tools such as filters, bass enhancement, compression, equalization and limiting. The improvement is machine-dependent: software can reshape the signal, but it cannot make small speakers produce the deep bass or volume of larger ones.
What EasyEffects can—and cannot—fix
EasyEffects is an audio-effects application for PipeWire. Its processing can reduce unwanted low-frequency content, make some bass notes more perceptible through harmonics, control volume swings and adjust tonal balance. Whether that sounds better depends on the laptop, the material and your preferences.
It does not add physical bass extension or speaker power. The project’s notebook-speaker guide says, “Every notebook has its own frequency response and dynamic range so there’s no panacea,” and cautions that the result will not match more substantial sound systems. If processing makes audio harsh, boomy, distorted or tiring, reduce or remove it.
Check PipeWire and install EasyEffects
EasyEffects is intended for PipeWire audio applications. Many Linux distributions provide an easyeffects package; the project also documents a Flatpak option. Packaging can affect which plugins are available, so confirm that your chosen installation includes the effects you intend to use.

Keep your actual hardware output selected as the default device. The EasyEffects project README explicitly warns: “Do NOT set Easy Effects virtual devices as your default audio input/output.” After installation, open EasyEffects and confirm that audio is routed through its processing controls while the laptop speakers remain the real output device.
Build a speaker-tuning chain
The official guide gives a useful sequence, but its values are examples from the author’s ThinkPad P1—not universal settings. Change one control at a time, listening to familiar speech and music between adjustments.

1. Add a limiter to control peaks
Place a limiter near the end of the processing chain to control peaks before they reach the DAC. It can help contain sudden loudness increases after other effects are applied. Avoid driving it too hard: excessive limiting can introduce distortion or other unwanted effects.
2. Use a high-pass filter to remove unhelpful low bass
A high-pass filter reduces frequencies below its cutoff. The guide’s author began near 50 Hz, raised the cutoff until the lower audible signal started to change, then backed it off slightly. On that ThinkPad P1, the change began around 160 Hz and the final example was 145 Hz. Those figures describe one machine, not a recommended setting for every laptop.

3. Add bass harmonics, not fictional sub-bass
A bass enhancer can generate harmonics that make low-frequency content more perceptible on small drivers. It does not make the speakers reproduce real sub-bass they cannot physically produce. The guide’s +24 dB amount is an example from its author’s setup; use a more restrained adjustment if the sound becomes bloated or unpleasant.
4. Use multiband compression to manage dynamics
Multiband compression can reduce dynamic range and adjust different frequency bands separately. The guide proposes starting input gain at -6 dB, with adjustments for the particular notebook; its author’s final makeup values differed from the suggested defaults. Treat the setting as a starting point only, and listen for pumping, muffled speech or an unnatural tonal balance.

5. Try modest stereo widening only if it helps
Stereo Tools can alter the perceived width of playback. The guide offers 0.25 stereo base as an example starting point, while warning that widening can have side effects, including reduced bass. Skip it if it weakens the sound or makes voices and instruments seem unnatural.

The Community Presets index includes profiles for particular built-in speakers, including Xiaomi Pad 6, HP Pavilion x360 11th Gen, Lenovo ThinkPad P14s Gen 2 AMD and Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Yoga Gen2. It also lists a JackHack96 preset described as having advanced auto gain that works well on laptop speakers.

- Use a model-matched preset when one explicitly targets your exact laptop or speaker configuration. It is still a community contribution, not a guarantee that it will suit your unit or taste.
- Use a general laptop-speaker preset as a starting point if no exact match exists, then listen critically and adjust rather than assuming it is calibrated for your machine.
- Tune manually if you want control over each effect or cannot find a compatible preset.
The preset index explains importing through the application’s preset controls or copying files into the configuration directory; the directory varies by package type. It also notes that EasyEffects 6.0.0 changed preset structure and that PulseEffects presets may need conversion. Check the instructions for your installation and version before importing.
Make the result useful, not merely louder
- Start with familiar speech and music at a comfortable listening level.
- Adjust one effect or setting, then compare with processing enabled and disabled.
- Keep the change only if it improves clarity or balance without introducing harshness, distortion, boominess or fatigue.
- If a preset sounds worse, disable it or use it only as a source of ideas for manual adjustments.
There is no universally best chain: the laptop’s response, the available plugins and your preferred sound all matter. EasyEffects is most useful as a way to tailor the audio your speakers can reproduce—not as a way to overcome their physical limits.
