Canonical now aims to put the newest upstream Linux kernel available at Ubuntu’s release freeze into an Ubuntu release—even if that kernel is still a release candidate (RC). The policy can bring newer features and hardware support to users sooner, but a late upstream release can leave less time to test the kernel and prepare drivers or other dependent components.

What changed in Canonical’s kernel-selection policy?

Canonical’s Kernel Team (CKT), which selects, prepares, qualifies, releases, and maintains Ubuntu kernels, previously used a more cautious “wait and see” approach. It generally chose an upstream kernel expected to be released early enough for roughly a month of stabilization, while considering a last-minute move to a newer version if timing allowed.

Under the new policy, Ubuntu targets the latest upstream Linux kernel available at the specified release freeze, even if upstream still considers it an RC. Canonical says the change is intended to deliver recent features and hardware support sooner and give silicon vendors firmer signals for planning Ubuntu releases and Hardware Enablement (HWE) updates to existing LTS releases. Canonical Kernel Team policy post, August 9, 2024

Why can a newer kernel make an Ubuntu release riskier?

Ubuntu release dates are set well ahead, but Linux kernel release timing can shift. The CKT says it generally needs about a month after an upstream release to consider the corresponding Ubuntu kernel stable enough for release. When those schedules converge, there is less time to test, fix problems, and integrate software that depends on the kernel.

  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Canonical uses two labels for releases where timing is especially constrained:

Tight Release

A Tight Release is expected when the upstream kernel is around RC4–RC6 at Ubuntu Feature Freeze. Canonical expects the upstream release to arrive before Beta Freeze, but the remaining time for testing, issue resolution, and integration of dependent components is limited.

Unstable Release

An Unstable Release is expected when upstream is in its open merge window or around RC1–RC3 at Feature Freeze. The kernel may still be an RC at Beta Freeze, so users should not expect complete stability or all dependent components to be ready.

What do stabilization, dependent components, and bridge kernels mean?

Stabilized kernel

A Stabilized Kernel is an Ubuntu kernel and its dependent components that the CKT has declared to be working as intended and to have passed known tests, including release integration and kernel testing.

Dependent components

These are drivers and other code that rely on a particular kernel version but are not wholly controlled by the CKT. Canonical gives NVIDIA GPU drivers and ZFS as examples; their support may not be available for an indeterminate period after the upstream kernel is released.

Bridge kernel

In some late-release cases, Canonical may offer a previously released, prepared, and qualified kernel temporarily to help users upgrade before the target release kernel stabilizes. The CKT expects a bridge kernel’s life to be on the order of weeks, followed by an update to the stabilized release kernel.

What support does Canonical describe for late releases?

The support expectations differ by release timing. They are especially important for systems that need particular drivers, ZFS, livepatches, or variant kernels.

Release situation Kernel and support expectations described by the CKT
Tight Release The ordinary kernel SRU process and livepatches continue for released kernels. Variant kernels are best-effort and may arrive later.
Unstable Release The kernel is minimally supported and considered unsupported until stabilization. Standard SRUs, unstable variant kernels, dependent components, and livepatches are not promised. Issue reports or formal support requests may be handled best-effort or deferred until stabilization.

Canonical says late-release situations should be exceptions rather than the norm. The policy applies to future Ubuntu releases, but the CKT can announce a kernel-version commitment only for the next upcoming release because Ubuntu and upstream Linux schedules are not coupled. Canonical’s announcement quoted Dell’s Jason Durst, Vice President of Dell Consumer PCs, saying the transition to 6.11 enabled faster delivery of Ubuntu enhancements to Dell customers using version 24.04.2 and supported the delivery of newer technologies in LTS releases. This is a vendor statement, not an independently measured outcome.

Ubuntu 24.10 was an interim release with nine months of support through July 2025, so that support period has ended. Its release notes recommended Ubuntu 24.04.1 LTS for readers seeking longer support and said it was supported until at least 2029 at the time the notes were published. Check Canonical’s current release information before choosing a version; kernel selection policy does not determine how long an Ubuntu release is maintained. Ubuntu 24.10 release notes

How should users weigh a newer kernel against readiness?

A newer kernel is not automatically the better choice for every machine or production environment. When evaluating a release, check the kernel version alongside the qualification status and availability of the components your workload needs.

  • Prioritize newer hardware or features: The policy is designed to make recent kernel capabilities available sooner, which can matter for newer hardware.
  • Check required drivers and components: Confirm that critical drivers and dependent software are available for the release’s kernel, rather than assuming they arrive at the same time.
  • Consider stabilization status: If a release is identified as Tight or Unstable, weigh the shorter validation window and the CKT’s stated support limits against the benefit of using the newer kernel.
  • Allow time for stabilization where needed: A user who depends on components that are not yet ready may prefer to wait for the stabilized kernel or, where offered, use a bridge kernel temporarily.

Is the 2026 kernel SRU cadence change the same policy?

No. Kernel selection determines which upstream kernel version Ubuntu targets for a release. Canonical’s separate September 23, 2026 announcement concerns how kernel updates are prepared, validated, and published after that selection.

Canonical describes moving from four-week regular and two-week security SRU cycles to an overlapping two-week cycle with releases published weekly. One week is allocated to package preparation, builds, and basic checks; the next to certification, distribution integration, and regression testing. Canonical says its Ubuntu Certified program tests kernels on different hardware types.

For users seeking a faster path, Canonical says weekly kernel release candidates are published in the -proposed pocket ahead of certification testing. Users choosing that route can perform their own kernel acceptance testing, but they do not wait for Canonical’s extensive certification testing. These are Canonical’s described processes and goals, not independently measured results. Canonical’s kernel SRU cadence announcement, September 23, 2026
